Start with the basics. Check for fuel and spark. Listen for the fuel pump, check the fuel pressure, pull a fuel injector connector and test it for a signal using a test lamp.
Spark can be tested by pulling the spark plugs while cranking the engine. The old fashioned way is to pull the plug wire boot off of a plug, hold a screwdriver tip in the boot while the rest of the screwdriver shaft is held close to another piece of conductive metal, and look for the spark to be arcing (jumping) from the screwdriver shaft to the metal. Be sure to use a long screwdriver with an insulated handle so you don't get zapped.
