We have a 2005 Escape with the automatically activated 4x4. I've tried many times to cause the 4x4 to enable, stepping on it in snow, etc. It seems like the 4x4 may be coming on, since I've never had a problem on hills or anything, but the dash light indicator for 4x4 never comes on.

Is the indicator supposed to light up when I spin the front wheels in snow?

I didn't think it was supposed to light up at all. Isn't it full-time 4x4 action anyway?
I only thought it lit up when it wasn't in 4x4 mode.

 

It only lights up if there is a problem with the 4x4 system, overheating or whatnot. If you can't tell if it's in 4x4, it's working! (I can't tell either, I just figure if it ain't slipping in the snow, I'm happy!)
