Question "Clicking" sound in 4WD, help please

It's snowing again here in Boston. I'd love to go out and play, but I'm having 4WD problems with '90 Ranger. When I push the 4WD button on the dashboard, the light comes on, I feel it engage, but I hear a clicking sound from the right front wheel. When I try to turn it off, the light will go out, but I'm still in 4WD and the clicking sound continues. Any ideas what's wrong? This is my first truck with push-button 4WD. My '83 (full size) Bronco 4x4 had manual locking hubs and a stick connected to the transfer case.
