Factory wiring harness under the dash
I currently own a 1985 Ford F-350 XLT Lariet (Camper Special) 460 4X2 auto. I am restoring this truck. It has cruise, tilt, AC, manual windows and locks. My question is this: I have been adding a few factory options and I wanted to know if the main wiring harnes under dash has the plugs for options that were not originall built with the truck. For example, I added OEM Intermittent Wipers, just plugged it right in. Added a OEM Guage package w/ tach, and pluggeg it right in. I found an OEM digital clock and I am wondering if this will just plug in (I have an extra XLT woodgrain trim panel w/ the 3 rectangular holes at the topr for the clock) Should there be a factory plug just sitting under the dash cap?
I also want to add OEM roof/market light and a OEM cargo light. Will I have to splice these into the headlight switch or wiill there be a plug for these too?
Thanks for any help.
Tom

The clock harness ties in near the bottom of the dash on the R side of the ashtray, i.e., beside the glove box. It uses a harness that plugs in between an existing connector, so the answer is "no, there's not a connector for it" and "yes, it just plugs in".
I've never investigated the clearance lights, but I suspect it's just as easy as your other "mods".
To add a cargo light (they weren't offered before '87), you have to change out the harness that runs under the driver's threshhold and the one inside the B-pillar that powers the dome light. They're easy to find in junkyards, but often have major corrosion at the connector below the shoulder belt reel.

Thanks for that piece of info. I just bought the clock today (NOS from a Ford dealer in IL - It's been there since 1985! (the clock that is)
HMMM... I've been to a couple of Ford parts web sites and through some 80-86 parts catalogues and they all seem to have cargo lights for these years (80-86) The one site I visited had an NOS 80-86 Ford cargo light (complete - housing, light, lens and even the wiring harness). Sounds like it would not hurt anything if I properly install it (I think is is to come on when you turn the light switch as apposed to pulling the ****). Makes me wonder though, if these sites are just saying they will fit a 80-86 truck, although the site did say it is OEM Ford 80-86.
Take care

Yes there is a plug in for the roof lights.
It is usually behind the headlight switch on a harness not on it.
Up through the front door pillar.
Cargo lights were a available in the 70's.
Easy hook-up with wiring through the front door pillar.
Most electrical options were plug & play.

Tom,
When you added added OEM Intermittent Wipers, what exactly did you do, where did you find the parts, and how much did it cost?
One thing that's lately been bugging me about my truck is that it doesn't have some of the "niceties" that we take for granted these days (guess I've been driving the wife's truck too much).
TIA,

Factory wiring harness under the dash
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Dec-02 AT 11:04 AM (EST)]Hello:
If you add OEM intermittent wipers, you will need two main parts: the intermittent wiper switch and the delay box. At the time I installed theme, I had the guage bezel off as I was installing a factory guage package w/ the optional tach. I simply unplugged the wiring harness from the standard wiper switch (almost a full circle w/ a flat spot). I then unscrewed the ground wire and took off the retaining nut and pulled out the wiper switch. I then added the intermittent wiper set up and followed the reverse order. With the delay box (it's was already factory tied ito the intermittent switch) I mounted it to it's factory location under the dash (it has 2 screws that hold it from moving around). Note - make sure you reconnect the ground wire!. Presto - I now had intermittent wipers (definitely a nice option in light rain, misty conditions). The set ups from 78-79 require a slight modification to the wires for it to work even though the plugs are the same, if you try to use it in the 80-86 models. I believe the setup changed again from 87 on.
I got mine used from a reputable source. You can try eBay, a salvage yard, or on-line (I know of a few places that have these new - but you will pay abount $100 for the set-up new. Believe it or not, I just recently found a NOS OEM digital clock (still on the dealer shelf) that was an option in the 80's. I just had to get a woodgrain XLT bezel w/ the factory clock cut-outs (3 rectangular openings at the top), which I found.
Hope this helps.
