Personally I'd go 3000. Its probably safe to go 5000 though. I'm not a big fan of extended drain intervals. The bad stuff has to come out one way or another, and I'd rather drain it with the oil than pull it out with the engine.

JMHO.

If you are only going 3000 miles on this type of oil, then you would be better off with a conventional oil. I would feel comfortable going 7500 miles on this oil. If you are not comfortable with such a long interval, then try going to 5000 miles and getting a used oil analysis. There is no reason to be skeptical or nervous about extended drain intervals. They have been proven to be effective. The 3000 mile oil changes is an antiquated idea whose time has come. Engine oils and their efficient usage by modern engines are far superior than they have ever been. Personally, I like synthetic oils but use Motorcraft in my 78 Bronco and 99 Expedition with 5000 mile oil changes. My used oil analysis are excellent and my engines are in great condition.

Definitely no less than 5000 under most circumstances. As a matter of fact, I do that on dyno, though in my case over 80% of my miles are highway miles.

IMO, I have yet to see a UOA on RP 5-20 that would last much longer than 3-4K.

MC 5-20 has been proven a stable oil out to 5K time and time again for a fraction of the cost...so why pay more for less?

I agree with superrangerman2002. Unless you like the novelty of purple oil and higher costs, The MC 5w20 seems like the way to go. I have never seen a UOA from RP 5w20, but would guess it is good to 5000 mi. If you really want to use it, get a UOA on it and see how long it will last for you in your truck.

I might be a rookie on this particular forum, but my experience with the Royal Purple is quite an expensive one. Really, for the difference in price, I have found no benefit to purchasing Royal Purple versus Mobil One. At the very least, IT IS SAFE TO SAY THAT YOU'RE INSURING YOUR ENGINE'S LIFE BY USING EITHER ONE. Wal Mart's $20 for 5 quarts is much better than paying $7.50 for a quart of the purple juice.

WHAT KIND OF OIL FILTER DO YOU GENTLEMEN USE ON THESE FORD TRITON ENGINES? I've been using the MotorCraft in fear that Fram would either limit flow or not have enough filtration. I understand that K&N makes an oil filter, but that too is expensive versus the WalMart price of $4 for the M.C. WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK?

I normally use wix. Sometimes use Motorcraft. Purolator is good also. Supertech used to be real good considering the price, but I think they have gone to a real cheap plastic end design. I won't use Fram.

I use Motorcraft on mine. They've proven themselves and are hard to beat for the price. Same goes for Motorcraft engine oil. I don't think the K&N is worth the price. Wix and Purolator also make a good oil filter.

I'm not crazy about Royal Purple (Mobil 1 is a much better deal IMO). Here's a good UOA of RP that went 7500 miles: http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/...=001995#000000
Here's another: http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/...c;f=3;t=000869

Again, I'm no fan of RP but I think this reinforces my idea that 3000 mile oil changes are an idea whose time has come.

Here's some links to long term tests with Mobil1 and Amsoil.

Yeah, there are those that will dispute the data and say that the sample size is not large enough but the fact is; it's all there in black and white. I mean, come on, how much difference is there really going to be.

Here is some 5.4 - 4.6 synthetic extrordinaire

http://www.elfmoto.com/elfauto/elfevolution0W30.php

It can go 1 year depending on miles if using a Motorcraft , Wix or Purolater filter in the desert or in Maine . It's the lightest 30wt I've seen and no moly used .

There's a banner up top that shows a source for this oil .

DOHC, thanks for the link! I had never heard or seen the oil mentioned there, elfevolution, Ow30! This Forum never ceases to amaze me, with the wealth of information, I learn from all of you here. Thank You. ED
PS The $2.77 at Walmart for Motorcraft FL400s Filters, how can you beat that? Dirt cheap price, for a quality oil filter...

What I can tell you is that ELF is huge in Europe as far as petro stations go--well at least in '98 they were. Firewall won't allow me to access this site @ work...
