trailer brakes

Has anyone added an electric brake controller to their truck? If so, what brand did you use and where did you mount it?

Recently added a unit to our 2004 XLT SuperCrew for towing a Kiefer 2-horse trailer (aluminum).

Controller = Reese Brakeman Compact (solid state)
Mounting Location = right bottom side of dash, just above accelerator (I'm 6' and it does not interfer with my leg)

I've had a couple. I had an Impulse I paid around $75 for in my last truck. It was a Ranger 4.0L and I was towing around 4,500 lbs. The Impulse was a little frustrating to set up, but once set up, it worked ok.

I'm pulling around 8,300 with my F150 and I've got a Prodigy. It's easier to install and has features for handling heavier trailers that were not included on the less expensive Impulse.

Seems like I paid around $110 for the Prodigy.

Enjoy.

I installed a Prodigy in my F-150 just after I got it. Mine had the tow package and the wiring harness to splice into the Prodigy wiring harness and the breaker was in the pocket on the driver's door. Took about 15 minutes to install. You plug it into the plug near the steeting column and attach it to the metal plate next to the emergency brake release. You have to drill 2 holes as the Prodigy comes with a holder and screws. Ordered mine for $99.99 plus $9 shipping from Rvwholesalers.com and got it in three days.

same here I use a Prodigy. Mounted it just to the right of the steering column on the flat surface above the knee boolster. had it installed by the local camper service center. I pull a 22' travel trailer and it (break controller) works great once you fine tune it to your vehicle's breaking system. Paid $69.00 for the controller and $50.00 to have it installed.

prodigy pictures

It looks like the consensus is the prodigy controller. Are there any more pictures available of your installations. I am 6' 3" and don't want to be banging into the controller with my legs. The installation in the middle slot looks like it will take up too much Knee room for the center passenger....I have the FX4 supercab with a bench seat. Thanks for everyone's help!!

I am 6' 4" and have an FX4 as well, but I have the new dash and with center console floor shifter. Anyways, I mounted mine on a piece of steel that is located on the left side of the dash just to the right of the E-brake. I haven't had any problems, except every now and then I brush it with my foot when putting on the E-brake. I don't know if you will have the same bracket as me, but it is worth a look.
