Exclamation Glass to Metal Frame Seal on Vent Window

What is the material that holds the glass in the metal frame of the vent window? It appears to be about .050" thick is this the glass setting tape I have seen in catalogs?
I am not looking for the piece of rubber that goes on the metal frame that seals when the vent window is closed or the 12" long piece that is connected to the back channel of the roll up window that seals on the back of the vent window when it is closed.

I recently had my vent windows redone by a local glass shop. $20 per side to remove and install them and I waited while he did it. The seal material was something they had on hand. It appears to be a composite rubber material - black with grey flecks in it.

When I had my vent glass replaced the glas shop just used a clear sealant/adhesive, caulk type material that they use in all their applications.

I was going to use a Silicone adhesive also. I am not sure that the vent window would seal correctly on the 1950 without the extra space being taken up by the material around the window. The glass could actual be put in crooked without the .050" of material around the edges.

Chris - Abe has a good method, but like you, I would worry about centering the glass. I would also be concerned about cleaning up the silicone squeeze-out.
Try a local glass shop to see if they don't carry the stock packing. I didn't think to ask my guy what the stuff was, but he stocked it apparently for many applications. This glass guy has done a lot of street rods and restos, though, so you might have to look around for it.
I checked my catalog file and while many suppliers offer the vent glass, none reference this seal/packing. We're on our own here.

Glass Setting Tape

My Glass Shop wanted $65 to set my Vent Window Glass for the 50 F1. I bought the tape from Early Ford V8 Sales in Ballston Spa, NY (earlyford.com part number B-37193-D) for $9.00 and set them myself. They need to be nice and warm to set good, so I set them out in the sun for an hour and then the glass pressed in OK. I have enough tape left over , so if you want it, send me an e:mail with your address and you can have it. Happy New Year!! Newt
