ok i'm looking at buying a flowmaster 40s muffler and just replace the muffler only, but is there any thing that would be a better choice for sound and performance.

Sound is all up to individual tastes. You might want to see if exhaustsoundclips.com have anything you like. Most aftermarket mufflers make the same amount of power, so it boils down to sound. Is interior resonance an issue with you? Flowmasters are notorious for interior drone, and their 40 series is their loudest AFAIK.

Agreed. You also may want to do searches on this forum regarding aftermarket mufflers. Some people started with a Flowmaster 40 and wound up with something else.

Strange as it sounds, when I mod a motorcycle exhaust and my first reaction is that the mod is too loud, I frequently get to like it and occasionally even go for a louder mod. The exact opposite is true of car/truck mods. If my first reaction is that the mod is too loud, I'm in trouble. It never grows on me.

In a car/truck, I like loud during acceleration, but I don't want to hear it when I'm not accelerating. From what I've heard, I don't think the 40 fits that bill.

Another thing to consider is other people who will frequent the truck. If your not single you may not want to mod the truck to your personal preferences alone.

Enjoy.

I have dual 40's on my 5.0 mustang and I love them. They are not too loud during acceleration and they have that unique sound at idle that sounds like theres something special under the hood. Minimal interior drone.

hey,

went with a flowmaster original 40 series muffler with all stock pipes. had a shop cut off my stock muffler(its huge) and put on the flow and added a liitle piece of pipe after muffler to tie into the tailpipe. love the sound, both inside and out, its the loudest at around 1600-1800 rpms, but love it and so does wife and kids. also noticed power increase. also, spend the extra 40 bucks and add a k&n air filter replacement. this also helped.
