which would you buy???
I have been looking for a truck for several months. Still have not found what I want. In your opinion, which would you consider the better truck and value?
#1) 2000 F-250, diesel, 4X4, ext cab, short bed, 130,000 miles for $18k
#2) 2001 F-250, V10, 4X4, ext cab, short bed, 72,000 miles for $18K
Both appear to be in very good shape, and are very similar vehicles. Which would last me longer? Which actually has a longer life ahead of it. I only drive 6k to 8k miles a year because I have a company car. But I plan to keep it 10 years or better.
Thanks, Bob

BOB for those prices the diesel is a better deal, but i would tell the seller of the gas about your comparison and show him the diesel your looking at is 18k and talk him down to closer to 15-15.5k, and buy the gasser. im saying i think for your type of driving youll be happier with the V10, but the guys price is a little high.

maybe he owes more then 16.5.. with 5 year payment plans its very possible.. i would leave your number with him with your offer and say your still looking and keep looking.... this dont help much but for comparison i helped a friend look for trucks...4 months back... he got a 2003 V10 4x4 F250 with 18k miles for $23... years ago in 2002 i got my 2001 V10 4x4 F250 for $23 and it had 14k miles on it... those were good/fair prices for those trucks at the time in Texas.

The V10 is a TX truck. I just saw a 2002 V10 cc w/68k miles sell for $21.5 in TX. A similar truck (cc V10 w78k miles) in FL sold 2 months ago for $23k. I know I can get more truck if I go with the V10. I'm in FL and the prices here are too high. I'm trying to stay under 20k, so the 2000 and the 2001s are my best bet.

I would go with the diesel no question. I am getting 17-18MPG (not towing) and it performs great. Also easy to maintain. The diesel is also a better buy.

I like to hear different opinions, I guess it all comes down to what "you need" vs what "you want". The age old question of the diesel vs the gasser will live on as long as Ford put both engins in its superduty.
IMO the diesel is the better buy. As long as the total phyiscal and mechanical condition of both vehicles are apples to apples.

Well, this is my attempt at advise and to keep this from turning into another diesel vs. gas sparring match.
Just remember, you are buying the whole truck, not just the engine. Find out what's broken, what's worn out, maintenance records if available, and overall condition of the transmission/accessories/paint/interior/etc. After considering everything between the two, pick the one in better shape overall and you will be pleased. When you drive the two trucks, check the steering, alignment, braking, and shifting. Look at the paint for scratches or lack of care. See if either truck was in a wreck or has dents or dings. Check the hubs to see if they work properly, test out the 4wd in hi and low to make sure it works smoothly.
Last, look at the options that are on the truck. Since you didn't specify if they were the XL, XLT, or Lariat editions, check out what accesories you want, the type of interior, and the paint and interior colors and decide which one you like best.
Overall you want to purchase something with the options you want, something that has been maintained well and is in good repair that you can rely on after you drive away with your purchase. Good luck and let us know what you pick.
