300 I-6 Exhaust Manifold Leak
Hello Everyody,
I've got and 84 with the 300. I've got an exhaust leak where the intake and exhuast manifolds bolt together. It's just a small leak, not very loud. Does anyone know it tricks to seal this besides pulling the manifolds and putting a new gasket between them? I've been avoiding pulling the manifolds, it was so much fun last time!
Thanks
Stacy

So, try taking the bolts out that hold the two together, loosen up the bolts into the head, slip the old gasket out, and the new one in. Of course, you always run the risk of disturbing the intake gasket, so you really should remove them and put in a new gasket there too. You can remove the three bolts between the two, remove the intake entirely (with carb still on it), and leave the exhaust manifold hooked to the exhaust pipe. Use a new gasket, with red rtv around all the ports, and put red rtv on the new metal gasket between the intake and exhaust. Bolt the intake down tight to the exhaust, and then bolt it back to the head. Just like that.

It's a common thing for the exhaust manifold to leak where those crazy hard to reach bolts are. Try retorqueing the whole manifold setup. Loosen all the other bolts and nuts/studs like you're going to take them off. Then retorque them in the same sequence like you were installing the manifolds.
This way, if it was a backout fastner you've eliminated the problem and not had to tear the manifolds off. If you still have the leak, well it's time for another gasket. I used the copper rtv last time. My manifold didn't leak, but the o-ring on the exhaust exit keeps popping.
