Big tires, can the inline six handle it, also what set is best??

Hey me again, I got a nice set of 15 inch aluminum rims from a friend, but there are some old tired tires on it, they measure 31 by 10.5 R15. So can my 1984 Ford F 150 2WD inline six with 124,000 original Ks. Yea and i know that it is a 2wd but i like the rims. someone reply and thanks

My '85 turns 31 10.50s thru the SMOD 4 speed and 3.50s. A little doggy off the line, ok on the highway.

You might not want to run them tires if they are really old--they get hard and slippery. Do a few burnouts and then get some new sneakers for the winter.

31's shouldn't even be an issue for your truck....might even get a little more top speed off of it. I run 35's with the stock gearing, a little tall but i still run 2k rpm at 58mph

yeah, it can handle it. I have the same size tires on my 95. gives the truck great ground clearance with no lift. true, take off is a little slower, but 300's aren't built for speed anyway. the larger tires should improve your gas milage a little as well. the 31's fill the wheel well nicely.

I HAVE 35 x 12.50 on my 95 which has 130 k miles on it and the 300 handles it fine. Im unsure of the gears but i know that they're higher. But I have no problem. It takes a little longer to get up to speed but other wise no problems.

I'm running P285/75R16 (33") on my '91 F150 4x4 with 3.09 stock gearing but with the taller tires, the ratio is, in effect, around 2.70. Pretty doggy. I plan on a change to 3.73. The six handles pretty good even with that ratio.

My '81 (see signature) had 31x10.5s on 16.5x8.25 wheels when I bought it.The fronts scrubbed a lot in turns. The tires were worn to 30" diameter. Mounted a set of 235/85R16 retreads, 32" diameter, on stock 16x6.5 rims. The scrubbing disappeared, even before re-alignment, but accelleration really suffered and passing power is now nil.

I agree with Optikal Illushun, It's all in the gearing as to how big a tire you want to run with a 300, I have a set of 46 inch Claws on my '95, I got rid of the Mazda five speed and put in a C-6, and I'm running 6;17 gears in my '79 one ton axles under it, She'll still turn'em over relativly easily

Will it Handle It

I had an 84 with inline 6 and 3 spd w/od manual tranny. I put 31" tires on it. The engine handled it OK but it tore up the tranny and top speed was 70. Also, the speedo and odometer will be off. My odo was short 10 miles for every 100 driven!! You have to keep in mind that the big tires change your gear ratio's.
I also had to beef up the front springs to keep them from hitting the fenders. I used Airlift airbags in them.

Yeah, there BIG'UNS allright 19.5\46\16LT and with the wheels that I had made for them they are 210 # each Tire and Wheel combo, I had MRWOFFROAD make me a set of 16x16 black steelies with one inch backspacing to set the tires out a little wider to help with the stability issue of going so big , hope to get pics up soon as soon as I can figure out this new fangled digi cam
