96 Glow Plugs

Hi guys, my truck is having a very hard time starting when it gets below 30. I know its teh glow plugs because it starts right up when i plug it in. My first question is how do i check the plugs to see which ones are bad or is it better to replace all of them at the same time. Also how do i check the relay since that seems to be an issue on some of the other threads i have read. Second how much to these parts usally run and where are the best places to buy them. And lastly what all is required to change the plugs and the relays?? tools, time ect. I really need to get this done since i am goin back to school on the 3rd and it will not start after sittin there all day which makes for an interestin experience for all my classmates lol. Anyways thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me and sorry for the long post. I am new to this forum and so far its been very very helpful. Thanks Derek

About $9 each for real Motorcraft glow plugs at AutoZone. Don't get the Autolite plugs elsewhere. You could try replacing the relay first, since that's almost always bad. If some of your plugs are bad too, replace all of them since the labor to get in there isn't something you want to do multiple times as each one fails. Search the forums and there are numerous posts with all the details on checking plug resistance, getting in there to change them, etc.

CLICK HERE to go to an excellent how to article on the glow plug system by Carpentractor.

LINK TO ARCHIVED THREAD I started when I did mine. The link in the thread for Carpentractor’s article does not work any more (Carpentractor moved the article) and the part number for the AutoZone / Motorcraft glow plugs has changed.

Hope these help out - Carpentractor's article helped me a lot.

I have both saved in MS Word if you would like them in that format. If you would like them click on my user name and send me an eMail (NOT A PRIVATE MESSAGE) with GLOW PLUG RELAY in the subject line and let me know what eMail address you would like it sent to and I will reply with the attachments.
