U-Wrench-It Question

I spent a good amount of my day yesterday at U-Wrench-It and was talking to one of the guys that works there. The gentlemen told me that if you return something to them they do not sell it but they crush it.

When I was on my way out I asked the guy at the register what was with the core charge on each item. He said that if I brought in the item I was replacing they would drop the charge and after spending $100.00 it came with a $5.00 core charge. Obviously it's not a lot but it got me kind of thinking, why would I bring something to you for you to just crush?

Do they sell the stuff off as aluminum or something? It doesn't bother me because they money I beleive goes to a Kidney foundation but it just got me thinking.
