To be fair, I just want to point out they only did that AFTER the tanks would not explode in a side impact they conducted
If you have sold 600,000 of something and have 600 problems, that is a failure rate of .001 %. Some of these recalls and problems are nothing more then common failures that any OEM can not predict, Ford, GM, Jeep, Audi, etc.
Actually 600 out of 600,000 is .1 % not .001 %.

I don't what component is starting the fires, but I did have a small fire start on my '02 F-250 from the cruise controls switch on the master cylinder. . .
Picture ONE, and picture TWO of burned switch. Hard to see in the picture, but the melted plug goes into the round orange switch hanging off the master cylinder, facing away from the camera.
Parts guy told me what I've read Ford has told others, "Oh yeah, that switch leaks and will start smoldering. . .we've got a ton of them in the back, let me get one for you!"

I think Munkey has hit it. This flaming F truck thing will be all about the master cyl mounted cruise switch and harness. What I don't know is exactly what turn this will take. What I do know is Ford is still smarting from the Firestone tire thing and the last thing they want is a popular selling model to have controversy, ginned up or not.

The rug on the tunnel of my Bronco started to burn once, because the muffler had a little hole on the top and the hot gases hitted the floor ¿does that count?
Explorer97 lost two this way. His ride burned and bagged his spouses next to it.
I've been cross-referencing threads and searching the web today. This is pretty ugly.
Like "Pinto" ugly or "ignition switch" ugly.
An interesting difference between my '97 and 2000 F150s is that the 2000 master cylinder has a vertical switch boss instead of the downwards-pointing unit on the 1997. That appears to be an attempt to take gravity out of the equation, but it does nothing for leakage under hydraulic pressure being shown by the switches.
One of the biggest causes of automotive fires is mis-installed audio equipment.
That wouldn't surprise me at all. I'm sure there would be lots of cases of electrocution also if the voltages involved were higher. A lot of aftermarket audio stuff is done very poorly by people who have no clue what they are doing.
Well said rebocardo. There will always be "bad" lots of parts, it just seems like everytime 5 or so cars catch fire (out of hundred thousands) the media wants to bash it to hell and back.
If mine were one of those "5 or so cars to catch fire"...I'd want to bash it to hell and back myself....

I drive 2003 Dodge Caravan and just had it in for recall to replace a power stearing hose "that could leak and cause a fire".

That's why I carry LOTS of insurance on my truck and my house (garage attached). Get replacement value insurance to cover your pattutie! Little more expensive, but worth it if something happens. I'm glad the holidays are over!

Watching my 1997 F150 catch fire ( which is not part of the recall years ) i can tell you this is a MAJOR problem. Three people have died and countless people have lost their houses. So what's your answer??? Park on the street?? do ever blame Ford for anything?? maybe just be the good american consumer and believe what the corporations tell me ( i do believe big macs are good for me though ) Ford is not at fault. right. it's just not cost effective for them yet...but it will be soon.......and i believe the 5 or so cars you speak about is rapidly approaching a bit more..
I saw a story on the local news this morning that showed an Expedition that caught fire and burned the house. They also relayed the message about the recall on the problem switches.
Ford is like Nissan in that they don't want to admit that the problem is larger than they realized. My girlfriends 2003 Xterra has a bad "shuttle valve" in the tank so it makes it almost impossible to add fuel unless you do it s l o w w w w w ! I mean slow! Nissan recalled some 2000 and 2001s but the problem is around in the 2003 and they have yet to issue a recall on something that is dangerous,,,,like gasoline rushing out at you while filling. I called their customer support line.....sounded like a Dell tech rep on the other end.
Oh yeah...monkywrench? On my 97 F-150.....the switch is pointing up.
