Help Identify 1970 F250... Custom? Ranger?

I bought this 1970 F250 in good shape, but the last owner stripped the exterior of all emblems when getting it painted? I can't seem to determine if it's a:

'Custom'
'Sport custom'
'Ranger'
'Ranger XLT'

What are the identifiers to tell me which one it is?

Here is what I know from the tags:

Series: F250 2wd
Engine: 390 cid 8 cyl
Assembly: San Jose, CA July 1970
Wheelbase: Long (131)
Color: Yucatan Gold (not really anymore, but it was)
GVW: 7500
Body: (F) LT/Med Ivy Green
Trans: Automatic

It's in pretty decent shape, and I'm looking forward to keeping it for a longtime. I want to gradually fix it up, but keep it as original as I can.

And how can I tell if it's a camper special? It has the under the bed storage area. Does that mean it's a camper special? The thing came with 'factory ac' too. It doesn't have the 'wood grain' trim on the interior... I think that specific to the 'Ranger'.

So I'm thinking it might be a 'custom'...what's the difference between the 'custom' and 'sport custom'.

Normally there would be a identifier on the side of the bed... but it's gone.

Any ideas?

The camper special will have front leaf springs. Perchance contact the previous owner and see if he has the emblems and trim? Maybe you can ask him on this issue as well. These trucks came in so many varying degrees of trim it would be hard to tell from the door sticker, or even just looking at the truck. I've owned Rangers that had bare bones options with just the exterior trim package, have seen the same truck with slightly different trim on the exterior, same year. I've also owned Explorer models, Custom Cab and Custom models...all seem to have varying degrees of interior/exterior options, different transmissions, engines, etc.

Yeah... it seems like anything goes.

Does custom, sport custom, ranger.... are these just trim package identifiers?

Looking at the original 1970 operators manual that came with the truck... looks like there we're a lot of options:

Radio
Lighter
Cargo Lamp Switch
Oil Pressure Gauge
ALternator Ammeter
Overdrive Control
Fuel Gauge Switch

My truck has all these options... but I don't seem to have the overdrive control.

Anyway... I called the previous owner and left him a message. hopefully he will still have some of the old trim emblems he pulled off.

If anyone else knows any specific identifiers for custom, sport custom, ranger, etc... please let me know.

I believe the aammeter and Oil Pressure Guage were top end options...probably Ranger or Ranger XLT....at least that's how it was for 67-69....Be aware that what IS left in the truck may not be from the original package either....Often the instrument bezels and other items have been traded out long before you come in possesion of the truck. You may just need to do some research, see which package has the most components available now, and refit it with those. My truck, for instance, came with a title that said it was a 1969....turns out only the doors and hood are, everything else is 1967....so you never know what you might have.

Just got a call from the previous owner... he tells me the emblems he discarded due to damage indicated it was a camper special, custom cab.

And I see coil springs on the front.

My interior is thrashed, and has been redone poorly many year back.... any idea what door panels and bench seat of a camper special, custom cab are suppose to look like? Can I get 'original' door panels anywhere?

Thanks for the comments all!

Do some searches on Ebay....there are several original brochures available from the year the truck came out that will show the interior and exterior details...You can also submit your VIN to Ford and they will send you a build sheet for your truck that will show which options it left the factory with.

If it is a custom, the door panels are made of painted steel. Sportcustom and up had vinyl panels. There are tons of the steel panel floating around for sale, cheap. I don't know about the different vinyl panels. Great truck. good luck with it!
