Can't use an exhaust brake with the 6.0 due to the VVT turbo. It will damage it.

Since the valves on the PSD are not mechanical (they're hydraulic) you should not use an exhaust brake on the PSD. Although some aftermarket companies make them, I think it's quite telling that International asked Jacobs not to develop a brake for their PSD engines (T444E and VT365).

You can make the engine and transmission work just like it had tow haul by using the controls. When you need engine braking cancel overdrive to get it to shift to 4th, then move the shifter to 3 if you need more braking, and to 2 if you still need more, and to 1 if you REALLY need braking. The computer is smart enough to not let the transmission downshift at too high of a speed. You actually can put it in 1 at any speed, and it will just stay in the higher gears until it slows. It will go to the lowest gear it can right away, then continue downshift as you slow.

local shop talked to BD brakes and they(BD) are working on torque converter and line pressure lockup for tranny with and without tow/haul. should be out early next year. They (local shop) have been installing brakes on psd trucks, there is a program to lock the vanes?, but they do say the braking available is a lot less than the older trucks.

I still wouldn't recommend it. If you look at your warranty, any damage that occurs will not be covered. As I mentioned earlier, the valves, lifters, etc. are not designed for use with an exhaust brake. It is likely that over time these will be damaged and that money will come out of your pocket. I put a lot of faith in International as I mentioned earlier, they specifically told Jacobs not to develop a "Jake" brake for these engines.

BD is building an exhaust brake....from them:
The Turbo Mounted Vacuum actuated and air actuated Exhaust Brake, (compression retarder) are available for all the Ford V8 7.3 and 6.0 PowerStroke diesels. This BD Exhaust Brake simply replaces the stock rear portion of the waste gated turbine housing or as in the 6.0 it mounts down in the exhaust system. The castings incorporate BD’s exclusive AlumiBronze bushing and piston ring sealed butterfly shaft that have proven to stand up to the exhaust emission environment. The brake incorporates BD’s exclusive Variable Orifice technology, where the spring loaded piston in the powerful 3" vacuum cylinder or the air cylinder is compressed by the off set stainless steel butterfly once the peak retarding pressure is achieved.

BD Variable Orifice exhaust brakes provide superior performance that starts at 1200 rpm with peak retarding hp achieved by 1800 rpm and then it just holds on right through the rpm range!

IMO it could cause other situations we have not seen before. By them placing it in the DP there is a question of effectiveness
