Unhappy 88 Stalls when steering column is turned

The truck keeps stalling as I am trying to back out of a parking space. I then restart and let the engine warm up a little longer, although I always let it warm up for about 10 minutes if it's been sitting for more than a few hours. As soon as put it in gear and start to back out, it stalls again. This is a very recent problem that I figured was just due to the recent climate change---the lows have been around 40 degrees in Texas. However, I noticed tonight as I spent thirty minutes trying to back out of my spot in a parking garage, that it only stalls once I turn the wheel. Once I restart the engine after a stall, put it in gear, and give it gas, it is still running UNTIL I TURN THE STEERING COLUMN. This problem was not limited to the gear shift being in Reverse. It did the same thing in Drive, as I found out while trying to just repark the truck and put in back in the same space.

Has anyone heard of such a thing? Any information will be greatly appreciated. Please and thank you in advance.

It sounds like there is a fray in one of the ignition wires that runs inside the steering column. It would be the place I start my search. Good luck.

I am going to make the assumption that you have automatic transmission. If you give it more gas while keeping your foot on the brake (to keep RPM's up) does it still stall when you turn the wheel?

If you are able to get it out of the parking spot, does it stall when you dirve around corners and turns?

It could be that there is a heavy load placed on the power steering pump that is causing your Bronco to stall, perhaps the front axle U-Joints are frozen or some other problem in your steering system causing a drop in RPM's while turning.

What is your "in gear idle" running at?

gman88 may be on to something with the idea that the power steering is putting too much drag on the engine but it could be that your "in gear idle" is too low to begin with.
