Engine problems with 91 Ranger

Here is the story. I am the proud owner of a 1991 Ford Ranger 2wd 4cyl 2.3L.
>I have done numerous work to my truck in the past but I need help on this one. I started my truck one day and I heard the engine making a ticking sound. The sound got faster the more I pressed on the accelerator. A buddy of mine said that there could be a problem with the lifters. He had the same problem in his Ranger and the lifter had broken and after he changed it, it was fine. I decided that I would wait untill the weekend and then I would look into replacing the lifters. I continued to drive my truck (only about 4 miles a day to work). Some times the noise would stop all together. During this time my truck would run fine. Tonight my wife had to pick some stuff up in the Ford and that is when disaster struck. It started to make a really loud clunking noise and the engine was really shaking under the hood. We had big items in the back so I couldn't leave it on the side of the road. I decided to drive it back to my house so I could look at it this weekend. While driving it !
back
home I could here a hissing sound. I had to stop at one stoplight and the engine went "CLUNK" and then it shut off. I got it restarted and continued home. At the stoplight I felt some clunking down by the clutch pedal. (I failed to mention that I did put a whole new clutch kit in about 3 years ago and I haven't had any problems). Anyway as I contined on my way and then the truck "Old Blue" shut off on me. I noticed the hissing noise stopped when this happened. I pulled off to the side of the road and it would not start again. It tries to turnover but it sounds very weak. It was dark at the time so I could look too much at the engine to see what was going on. I have to travel across the country in about 2 months with this same truck. I really need some help with this. I don't know where to begin to look for the cause.
>Could you please help me!!!!
>Thank you very much
