Diesel Newbie -- 2001 f250 ???
I am new to diesel engines, and looking at getting a used f250, diesel, crew cab, 4x4.
It has 95k miles, and the dealer is asking $22,900 for this.
I would be purchasing it from the ford dealer, they say there's been 1 owner, and all the service has been done there, with full records, that they will show me.
Are there any known issues or problems with this model that I should now about. Does the price seem fair?
Do you think I should have an independant mechanic look at it?
I'm assuming this truck/engine still has a long life ahead of it because of the durability of diesel engines?
Any feedback appreciated.
Thanks.

You should still have 5,000 miles of warranty for the engine. Be sure to look through their records of the maintenance, good to know that service has been done, when it should be done, and hopefully by a certified mechanic. Ask them about the coolant additive, and if it's been maintained. If they don't know what you're talking about, I'd be concerned. You can get test strips to test the SCA levels.
That price seems a little high, see if you can't talk them down any. It's not bad though, if it's the truck you want and the body and interior are in good condition and knowing maintenance has been done, it'll be worth it.
That truck will last easily up to 300,000 miles. There are some guys around here with over 300,000mi on '99 trucks, and some up to 500,000mi with older models.
Welcome to FTE!

thanks for the info -- going to give it a test drive this morning -- the salesman says it was owned by a contractor, but it was his personal vehicle (supposedly), and wasn't used hard on a job site all the time; also said he did "a little" bit of snowplowing -- don't like the sound of that, heard that this can be very hard on a car -- if I don't get it I'll let you know!

Recently picked up a 2000 F250 PSD automatic 4x4 standard cab, $15,500 with 89,000 miles. It had no maintenance history, but everything looked to be in very good condition. I've been doing ALL maintenance (scheduled for this mileage or not) so that I can 'reset' the maintenance clock.
Last item on maintenance list is transmission oil. I'll be changing it - and adding a trans cooler and an external spin-on oil filter next week.
So far, so good - well, except for the leaking fuel line...
I still have a few thousand miles left on the warranty.
