Intake air muffler?

I have a '97 Ranger w/ a 2.3L 8 plug setup. I removed the airhorn from in front of the mass airflow chamber and the results were amazing. I can now climb some of the hills without dropping a gear or two.

I want to chunk the air muffler too but what have any of you used in place of it? Where did you find the right sized tube?

I normally post on the 61-79 list because my toy is a '63 F100 stepside 292 c.i. Y-block. And the Ranger never gives me a minute's trouble. I sorry if I'm repeating a prior thread, but I looked back a ways and didn't notice one.

Thanks
Alan

Intake air muffler?

I just removed the muffler insert from the existing housing. With a bit of encouragement, a few oaths, and patience, it does slide out...

My '97 Ranger has run without the muffler or the air horn since it was brought home new... now 94000 miles, it's still gutless, but dependable as sunrise. About 25 MPG average.

Cheers,
Mike

Intake air muffler?

I just replaced this in mine, I did a simple fix really, I decided to put in a straight tube that was the same diameter as the intake tube. Since the tube dimeter is 2.75 inches, an uncommon size I went to the local muffler shop and had them cut me a piece of 2.5 inch steel tube and had the ends flared to fit in the intake tube. Results, MAN THIS THING IS LOAD!!! Runs great too, now I am just waiting for my exhaust, the little fours that can, I love these things.

Intake air muffler?

What is this "Air Horn" your speaking of? I am quite interested in doing the same thing. Did you have to change the type of air filter that the ranger uses after diong it?

Thanks

Intake air muffler?

I' interested in finding out if my F-150 has one of the intake silencers as well. I have felt my intake hose going over to the throttle body, and have squeezed what I could on the intake coming into the air cleaner, but could feel nothing.

Help us out here guys, I am trying to get a little more power out of this truck. I'm fixing to have to haul a 3800 pund truck 1200 miles with this thing.

Intake air muffler?

I have done this intake modification on my '96 ranger with a 2.3 4 cyl last summer.....inside the fender well there is a "air muffler" remove it. this allows a larger opening for air to pass thru the system. in between the air cleaner housing and the intake the is a "air baffle", "silencer" or what ever you choose to call it. remove it also. Now you have 2 choices... inside the baffle there is a cone shaped cylinder with holes. Patiently remove it by prying it out with out breaking the main body of the baffle and replace the "gutted" baffle in its origional loaction. Or replace the baffle entirely with an appropriate diameter piece of pipe as I did. You will notice a different noise comming from the engine compartment though, sorta like a mild rumble, but its ok, there is no harm done, but it sounds cool!! This modification will give a noticable power increase alone, add a K&N filter and be amazed at how much power you gain with little effort and little money

You can go to your local muffler shop and use pieces of their scrap stainless steel exhaust and have them bend it to fit your car. You can also go to the plumbing section of your local hardware store and buy PVC pipes and elbows and make your own. (if you make your own) Depending on the year of your truck you will have to drill holes in the pipe to allow you to screw in the one or two sensors that are needed. Just make sure you put the sensors and MAF in the correct place. They should be the same distance as the old pipe that you will be removing. I would not recommend using a K*N filter. You can gain a ton of power buy just replacing the intake pipe. I have heard too many complaints from people that install those oiled filters and they get oil on the MAF sensor and the truck starts to run like crap. I also know a guy that ran a paper filter and a K&N filter on a DYNO and the paper filter produced more HP than the K&N.
