2003 expedition Brake problems
I am just wondering if anyone else has had an issue with their 03 expedition brakes. I have changed the front brakes twice already with the rotors changed the second time and now I have to change the rear brakes and the brake mechanic is telling me that I need to change these rotors as well. We have only had the car for a year and bought it brand new. Also does anyone know the legal minimum rotor thickness or where to find it. Please help.

Personally, I have nothing but great things to say about my brakes. My Eddie Bauer Expedition is an early-build 2003 and i got it in August of 2002. I haven't had any brake problems at all, not even any squeeling or pulsating and I haven't even had a brake job or anything. However, getting to my point, a friend of mine has a 2004 XLT and her brakes are already starting to squeel and pulsate and mine is about a year and a half older than hers. So I'm not sure what's the deal with some Expeditions having brake troubles and some not. She hasn't taken her Expedition in yet but when she does, if you haven't already solved your problem, I will let you know how it comes out.

exactally the reason i do my own brakes.
My ford 150 has 105000and ORIGINAL rotors. they dont go bad under normal driving conditions. they only need changing after too many cuts.
Anyone in a mechanic shop that does brakes makes the least amount of money. Think about it..... commissions and hourly pay. Is the most or least experienced guys doing the cheap work.
if they dont shake when you stop they are probabally fine. get a second opinion if it still bugs you

Need new rotors already!
I decided to do some research on the web as my 03 XLT Expedition is being serviced (24K miles). I brought my vehicle in because I noticed the rotors had developed a slight lip at the outer part. They are telling me that I have to replace my rotors & pads in the front but the back ones were fine. When I asked the service manager why I had to purchase new rotors, he said that these vehicles are like "heavy trucks" & that I would probably have to replace the rotors everytime I need new pads. Doesn't sound right to me.... everytime??? Has anyone else had to frequently replace their rotors? Let me know if you have had to deal with this issue.

The dealership put new front rotors, and pads all around on my 03 Expy EB under warranty at 32K miles. I noticed a lip on my front rotors also. Have had break dust issues that I resolved with "Kleen Wheels". Try doing a search here for "Brake Dust" on Expeditions and see what ya get.
There is a TSB on this problem, don't know the # though.

ugh.
I just had my brakes done on our '03 Expedition and it had about 24000 on it. The guy I had do it...who I trust said they put 1/2 rotors on these from the factory to save weight and he replaced mine and said I should be good for a long time now. They warrenty them so I trust them. If they wear out soon..they will replace them. Oh yeah...I also only had to have the front done and was told the same thing...it's like a heavy truck and alot of weight is put on the front brakes when you stop.

Changed brakes early also!
I just changed my brakes on my 03 Expedition. I only had 24000 miles on it. I have been changing brakes myself my vehicles for years and have never had brakes wear out so soon. My car is barely a year old and I would get the brake dust a lot on those front wheels. When I went to get quotes for having a shop do the job, I was told about it being a "heavy truck" also. When they gave me the quote without turning rotors, I choked and decided to change them myself.
The right side pad wore down to the rivet, and the left side was pretty thin, but some was left. When I went to have the rotors turned, the machinist told me one was below spec and one was right at spec. Neither could be turned. I bought new rotors. I thought this was odd and I have set up a meeting with my dealer's service manager to discuss this. Will post the outcome.
One other thing, my car was hit on wheel by a honda accord and I thought maybe this was causing the braking system to grab a little more bent a part. Not sure of this now since I have read other stories.
Can someone point me to a website that will show the entire steering mechanism with all the parts from wheel to wheel for an Expedition?
