Captains vs. 40/20/40 seats

After looking at the dealer's inventory locally here in TX it looks like the vast majority (80%+) of Super Crews have Captain's Chairs rather than 40/20/40 seats. I'm leaning toward the 40/20/40 seats but want to make sure I'm not making a mistake. The dealer said it is because people want the back seat air conditioning vents that are on the center console. Any insight would be appreciated.

I have leather captain chairs(FX4). Unless you need to carry 6 people, I would highly recommend the captains. IMO their comfortable, look WAY better (especially w/ the floor shift), you get a cavernous storage bin in the center console, and four cupholders. I think you would be making a mistake by not getting it. Just my 2 cents.

I've got the 40/20/40 leather in my Lariat. Trust me, no one could sit on that center section, its useless. If I had to buy it again I'd go Capt's just for the fact you get a decent console storage/trash collector.. The dog would have liked those AC vents also..

FYI - the 40/20/40 seats (the '40' portion) is the EXACT same seat as the 'captain' seat. You're not getting anything special with the captain seat. All you gain is the center console (can't put my cooler on the floor in the middle then)...and the rear vents. By the way, there are heat vents under the floor of the driver and passenger seat, so heat makes it to the rear (not sure if A/C flows through those though). Anyway, if you want the extra vents and you like the console, go for it. But you get the exact same seat. Go look at them closely. It's the same seat. I have no regrets with the 40/20/40. I personally find it more useful and flexible.

From the XL to the King Ranch...it's all the same seat. Only difference is the covering.

The only reason we considered the bench seat is that my wife and I trade driving often on longer trips, and bench seats make it easy for her to "scoot over" while I walk around. I liked the floor shifter enough that the captains chairs won. The trucks glove box is small, so the big center-console storage is also a welcome bonus.

lariatF150, regarding: *From the XL to the King Ranch...it's all the same seat. Only difference is the covering.*

Are you sure about that? -- I notice that in the XL the 40/20/40 cloth seats do not include a passenger side lumbar support. That is not a big deal to me, but if beyond that all the f150 40/20/40 seats have the same support and quality level, that would be interesting to me, as I am considering the purchase of an XL.

I have 04 xlt screw. I agree the glove box is small. The center console give an abundance of extra room. For the guy wanting to tote a cooler. With size of the center console, insulating it and using it as a cooler with ice packs could be a real possibility. You could probably fit about 12 cans in there. Just a thought, I do HVAC so would be an easy mod for me but any hardware store should have skinny stick-on insulation. If anyone thinks this is a good idea and trys let us know how it works, I would trey it if wife didnt drive the truck most of the time.

Passenger side lumbar support - you mean, an adjustment for it? I would imagine there are SOME differences like in the amount of adjustments they provide, but it's essentially the very same seat. The shape and size, location of the creases, etc. Even the XL photos look the same to me. I haven't looked at an XL, but I doubt they put any adjustments on the passenger seat other than forward and backard for the seat itself and up/down on the seatback.

I ordered my truck with the 40 20 40 bench. It was a painful yet practical decision. I liked the way the console looked. I also had times where comfortable or not, that extra seat was usefull. While I waited for my truck to be delivered I questioned that decision daily. I am good with my decision and feel I made the right one for myself. Heck if I did get the console I would wonder how long that phoney plastic **** would last anyway.

Maybe a neater solution: Our old insulated soft-sided stadium cooler (you know: the vinyl ones with the zipper top and sholder strap) fits inside the center console. It holds a couple of sandwiches and 4 or 5 drinks, and some zip-locked ice bags. I think we got it at a big discount store several years ago; Maybe $15-20, but still no leaks.

I ordered my Lariat with the bench. Although I agree that the captains chairs look a little "cooler" - can't beat the practicality of the bench. My kids like to ride in the front and steer when we're in the yard/pasture -- wouldn't be feasible with buckets.

I have three dogs that frequently ride in the backseat of my CC, so the bench was more practical for me. I can just fold the center console up and use it like a wall for the dogs. Otherwise, they are all trying to "sneak" up to the front. When I used to own a Tundra it was a complete pain in the ****...they were constantly standing and scracthing on the console just begging to sit with their papa.

I ordered the Lariat with Captain Chairs because i wanter leather throughout the truck. I too looked into the benahc but i found out that your entire interior may not be leather. On the Lariat the charis are leather. Not sure where I read this but if you get the bench seat then the bench is leather and the rear seat "pleather". Only if you get the captain chairs do you get leather throughout your truck. I suggest you ask around on this. I have an '05 Lariat.

You only get leather in the back seat if you buy a supercrew. All supercabs have vinyl in the rear. And the leather in the rear on the supercrew is only in the patches where your butt and back hit the seat.

Someone here pointed out the leather patches in the rear supercrew seats...
