houston area transmission shop?

I am going to need my transmission rebuilt or buy a rebuilt one.
Can any of y'all recommmend a transmission shop in the Houston area that has reasonable prices and does quality work?

Have y'all had any experience with Aamco or Thunderbolt?

Thanks everyone

Recomended transmission shops

I would go to aamco before thunderbolt. Unless you want to vist them every other day. With a 1990 your transmission should be rebuilt for a reasonable price there.

You say you need a transmission rebuilt and a price. Well some cost more then others to rebuild. You need to tell the year, make, besides we think its a automatic, when you might have a standard transmission. Also it could be a 4 wheel drive unit. And as far as Ammco or thunderbolt. I would not go there. Whats your trans. doing ?? This my sound weird. But I have seen people that thought there trans. was bad. When all that was needed was changing of the filter screen and the fluid. If its a automatic. Your better off not to tell the shop it needs rebuilding. They will do it,when it dont need it.Ask them to check it out for you to see what it needs. They might come back and tell you a new filter replacement and fluid is all you need. Good Luck !!!

A great transmission shop in Houston is David Meyers Transmission in Pearland. I found out about him when he fixed my neighbors transmission free of charge. Vacuum leak but he could have pounded my neighbo for a tranny rebuild and did not. He hs helped me with a number of transmission questions. Does good work and very honest. Highly Recommended. (And no my name is not David Meyers and I am in now way related to him nor do I socialize with him in anyway. Just real happy with the service I have received.)

Your request for help is to vague. Need year, make, model, etc. ??
Is your job turn-key or Carry Out ?? Is this a High performance application ??
or a just a Cruiser ??

On a Carry Out you can save money but they have to limit their warranty
from a couple of weeks to 30 days I have heard.

A good trans shop will either do automatics or specialized in standards.
They cannot do both at least not reliably.
I would stay away from the franchise shops and Thunderbolt of course.
Anything that is to high volume with lots of overhead to me is a sign of trouble.
They cannot pay attention to the minute details and give a
trans the TLC that it needs to get it going again.

I would be leary of a shop that has to advertise to generate business.
I would look for a backlog of work which translates into plenty of repeat business and referals.

Also look for commercial business, coming from entities such as the city, county, schools, police and fire depts. This tells me they know what their doing.

A good shop will let you tour the garage area ; are the mechanics up to speed ?
is it clean and well organized. Does everyone look busy and focusing on their work ?

I have heard of unscrupulous shops buying junkyard transmissions for $ 300 - $ 500 and charging full price.

As long as it outlasts the warranty they give you they will come out ahead.

Try calling the Houston Better Business Bureau for previous complaints.

BUYER BEWARE !!

I hope this helps.

Moore Transmission on Hwy 6 in Alvin did good work for me. They could've ripped me off for a rebuild but it turned out that I needed a new computer. Saved me around $1000.

BTW, David Myers in Pearland (see Texas2004's post above) is my wife's cousin by marriage. I can also vouch for his quality of work. He did my mother-in-law's transmission in her Explorer and it has run like a top since.

Smile Arabies Transmission in BAYTOWN

There is a shop out in Baytown. They build Performance Transmissions and have an excellent reputation. May want to check with them. The man's name is Jimmy Arabie.

Best of luck. I had a new one installed at A C Collins Ford. But I am sure I paid too much. I just wanted a new stocker.

Kindest REgards,
John Otis Swatsell
