Ford F4

I am thinking about purchasing a '49 F4. I've owned a 66 F-100 before. I know that the F4 is a totally different truck but I've always wanted to own this vintage. What do I need to know before purchasing? Will parts be harder to find than on the '66? What about the non-synchro gear box and powertrain? (Never owned a flat-head). I also nothing about the oil system on these? I understand that they use a not-detergent oil. Are body panels obsolete? What should I know about this truck?

Any information that you can provide me with is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Scott

Welcome to the site Scott. F4 and larger trucks use a unique wheel bolt pattern. 5 lugs on 8 inch diameter. Aftermarket replacement wheels are all but impossible to find. The F4 came standard with dual rear wheels with 18" diameters. Tire types are limited, and found at Coker, etc. The optional SRW F4 had 20" wheels, with slightly more availability. The F5 & 6 only had 20" DRW. Brake parts for the bigger trucks can (hopefully) be found at Job Lot Auto in NY.
