1976 F-250 460 carb issues

460 with spreadbore carb, secondaries are sticking, and no amount of carb cleaner is helping, the throttle shaft is free, and snaps back, but for some reason, it isnt snapping back all the way, so I have to pry a screwdriver in the linkage to force it totally closed. then the next time I get far enough to open them, its racing again.

I have to get home again, I cant get a new carb today...

it was an exciting drive in today. this truck has been sitting for 8 yrs.

Take the carb off, and put it in a dunk tank full of carb cleaner, let it soak for a while, and then toss a rebuild kit at it. If it's been sitting for 8 yrs, there's likely a fair bit of "green disease" inside of it that will only go away with a thorough rebuild. At the same time, you'll end up with a "like new" carb, and find out what's causing the secondaries to stick opened. For now, just don't try passing everything on the road...moderate use of the throttle will keep you from opening the secondaries. I had a 4 barrel stick opened on me once....thankfully I was able to just push the clutch in and kill the engine, but this can be a scarey situation if you were to have it happen in heavy traffic, or where there could be pedestrians.

ditch the spreadbore and put a 750cfm holley vacuum secondary on it, and adjust the timing to 14 degreesBTDC

i have a funny storie about stuck seconds.............not funny more stupid, took off the oil bath air cleaner to prime my carb (after runnin out of gas) after it was finally running (tank selector froze on a empty tank) i was haulin *** down the road, oh did i mention i didnt put the air cleaner back on.....and the gasket kinda got sucked in to the carb, which held the seconds open enuf to race it, lucky i got all the peices of the gasket out befor it all got tossed farther down the intake.
