cutting out in overdrive

I have searched for my specific problem, but have not found it so I will start fresh. My truck is a 04 fx4 cc w/ nov 03 build date. It has 27500 miles and I have had no problems till now. It all started out of the blue going up a good size hill. The truck started cutting in and out very rapidly. It only does it when in overdrive and under acceleration. Not heavy acceleration but normal as the cruise would do. I turned off the cruise and it still did it. If I shift into drive 3 or roll out of the "gas", it will stop immediately. This first occurred toward the end of a trip and did not reoccur untill the trip home 2 days later. The only thing I can attribute this to is that the truck never ran more than 45 min at a time untill the trip home. The trip home was 9 hours and the problem seemed to take an hour or so to happen after a stop for fuel or food. I never shut the truck off but once after allowing the turbo to cool for 10 min. Several tanks of fuel were run through so I don't think it's a fuel problem. Didn't do it all the time but was fairly consistant. Got a little worse as the day went on. No engine lights came on and fuel milage seemed normal at 17.5 @ 75mph. Also the speed that this takes place ranges from 63 to 73. I would appreciate any ideas before taking it to ford. I know this is long but I didn't want to leave anything out. thanks

Thank you Tim, I will bring it up to them. Everytime I go in for service I ask them to run an oasis, and they tell me that there's no updates for my 04. As far as I know, my truck has never had any kind of software update. Thanks

I would mention about the cutting out in detail. If it never did it before and just started, it could be something like wire chafing or a sensor going bad.

Gip my 04 has a build date about like yours and I have had a later flash, which I believe had to do with the cruise control. Also have the dealer check out out the wiring harness for chaffing. If you can find out what is available out there before you go to the dealer; you can get them to do what you want.

Several times I have learned things on this site that the dealer (who is a good one) was not aware of. Good luck.

Update, problem is getting worse. At least it should be easy now to get it to cut out for the tech. Taking it in today.

GIP It sounds alot like the problem that I posted (engine Flutter). Read my post and see if it relates to your problem I think that it is a turbo related problem as it is exactly the same noise that occurs when you do a heavy acceleration then let off.(womp womp womp) I have guages and I can tell when it will do it by the boost psi.

Took truck to dealer. Was told I had software corruption of the fickem? Don't know if I'm pronouncing it right. Anyway, 5 miles down the road it was still doing it. Brought it back in the next day. Now it has been diognoised as two bad fuel injectors. My confidence level is not all that high. Injectors were back ordered and should be in this Wed. I am going to try to be patient. I know these things can be fustrating to techs as well as customers.

Update! Drove truck home from Ford today. Ran like a champ. No cutting out, fluttering, barking, or whatever you want to call it. I am pessimistically optimistic it may be fixed. They replaced 2 fuel injecters, #4 and #5. But the kicker is that they said today that they found a code p0404. Said it was egr valve. If it is truly fixed I think the egr is the culprit. Only time will tell.

Once again proving that many of these issues can be fixed with a good dealership...great to read it was the EGR...we are slowly learning, the little bugger can be the main reason for many drivability issues.

IMO: The EGR valve is an ugly wart.

Cut it out (unplug).

Drove it another 75 miles today, not a blip! Getting more confident. Not quite ready to pronounce it fixed but getting close. Looks more and more like the egr.

Am ready to pronounce the cutting out, flutter, miss, whatever fixed. Has not hesitated one bit since replacing the egr. Only wierd thing was right after the fix the ac went out. Took it back to Ford today, the bolt or nut that attaches the ac clutch to the compressor backed out. My ac clutch was just dangling. Ten min. later they has a new bolt in and I was on my way. Dealership has been very good.
