1992 Ranger 2.3 turns but will not start. No spark

My Ranger was running great when suddenly on the highway it just died. I towed it to local nationaly known brake/ muffler shop where a good friend is the manager. He narrowed it down (guessed in my opinion) to no spark and no fuel. He thinks it could be the crank sensor, the fuel pump or the ignition module. Is there any way to pinpoint the problem without replacing parts? If it helps at all, it will sometimes start and run for about 2 seconds before shutting off. It will not repeat this unless it sits for a day or two. I am not sure if there are different 2.3 engines availible but mine is fuel injection and has two sets of spark plugs and wires.
Thanks in advance

Jerry, do you hear the electric fuel pump run when you turn the key on? It should run for about 3 seconds and then stop. You can also check for fuel pressure at the schrader valve on the fuel rail.

Your mechanic is right, if it's not the pump, then it may be the ign module or the crank sensor. There is a code scanner that can be hooked up to the engine, and that will tell which part is faulty.

No , there is no sound at all when I turn the key to the on position. I am leaning towards the pump. Right before it died, it seemed like it was starving for fuel. I would think if the sensor or ign module failed, it would have shut off instantly. I drove for maybe 1/8 of a mile just enough to get off the exit. If nothing else, the pump needs to be taken out to repair the faulty fuel gauge sending unit it has.
Thanks for your help. I will let you know how I make out.

I had a 91 ranger that had a similar problem although it was a 3l. It turned out to be the relay for the fuel pump. It was located under the fuse box in the engine compartment.

it also could be that your fuel filter could be pluged. you may need to replace this to make it run

So I had a friends 92 Ranger in the shop with the fuel pump not buzzing on.. I checked the inertia switch and fuses which were good. When I got to the wires at the pump its self there was no power... after tracing wires for a while I just ended up putting power straight to the pump from the battery and got the truck running just fine.. My question is if I can run it like this? I have a 10amp fuse and toggle switch in the circut
