Gas leak at exhaust manifold

96' 302 fuel injected: I see and smell gas leaking from the front drivers side cylinder at the exhaust manifold where it meets the head. It is idling rough and smoking out the pipe. What does this mean? Blown head gasket? Blown exhaust manifold gasket? I don't understand why gas would be getting by. Please lead me in the right direction. Thanks, Les

Maybe a fuel pressure or an injector problem? I am sure once you get this one post you will get others. Seems like it takes one to get things started. Have you checked your fuel pressure?? There are some posts on here that tell what you should expect? If you have a manual you can see what your pressure should be. Recently checked mine and had 37 PSI Static and about 34 PSI running. With a fuel injection test kit you get the attachments and a gauge to hook to the fuel rail. Maybe you can borrow one from one of the Parts store tool loaner programs.

thanks, I just checked the fuel pressure and it's normal (32) running. Not sure what you mean by static but I assume you mean with the key on. It was about 3 to 5. There is a ton of gas going into that cylinder. I wonder if it's the injector and how do I know. Should I remove the fuel rail and pull the injectors out and visually compare?

The Static test I did was to hook up the fuel pressure gauge and turn the key on, then off, then on and leave on. The fuel pump should exert static pressure and hold it there for say 5 mins. or so before starting to drop any. There is a tool called a Noid light used to check injectors. Have never used them, but have read about them on several tool websites. If you "Google" by Noid light, may be one word, it should come up. There is also a post on here about checking fuel pressure too. I will see if I can find it and post the link.

Take a look at this thread. Read the posts by fefarms about the injectors. I searched this Forum by Fuel Pressure and several things came up. This may not be exactly what you have going on, but it may help.

Thanks again, I checked out the thread you gave me. I disconnected the connector to the suspect injector and it stopped leaking out the manifold at that cylinder. I think that the injector is staying open. I will replace it and hope that sovles it. If not, I will suspect the fuel pres. regulator, but i really don't think it's a problem although when I turned the key to "on", one time, the pressure was less than ten and the thread you gave me said it should be atleast 20. That throws me for a loop there. I will have to try it the way you said by turning it on-off-on. I'll get back to on here tomorrow. Les

This is a really good post. Its lenghty but well worth reading. The part in the next to last post by fefarms says if you remove the vacuum line from the Fuel Pressure Regulator and there is fuel in the line the FPR (Fuel Pressure Regulator) is bad. You might try this to check yours.

Thank you very much, as usual , FTE members are my ace in the hold. I have made progress, I won't call it solved, yet. I changed the plug and it's been fine. But those were new plugs, so I wonder what made the plug stop firing. Sometimes problems are intermittent.

Let us know how all this turns out. Post up a summary of the final outcome. I may need it one day.
