Thumbs up finally found s/b

I"ve been looking for a S/B for awhile now. When I went to deliver the 80 s/c I sold there was a 78/79 Ranger XLT parked out back. Its a 4x4 with a few problems. When you start it the oil pours out as fast as you can put it in.Rear main seal and plenty of knocks top and bottom. But its all there and a good candidate for one of my 429s.Just gotta wait for the guys kid to come home next weekend.Hoping to get it for 8 or 900 bucks.

Yep.

I also tuned mine for the winter roads the other day.

It was 4* out of time,..... no wonder the take off was a little sluggish

Dennis sounds like you know your 385s.What I have is 2 blocks C9 and D1 I understand that these can be either 429 or 460 but I have 2 429 cranks.I know this as the casting # on the cranks are 4u and 4uab which tell me 429.What is ab and would you use the older block.I was told that it might have a higher nickel content?????? dont understand that

D1 = That just means it was designed in 1971.

What is the actual Day of casting ?

Look for something like this *1G23 *

I would use the early block, as i believe (not sure, but if you know dennis correct me if i'm wrong) it has a shorter deck height which in turn gives you a high CR, but it could the early heads that give the higher CR, i'm not totally sure.

I think your right on the early block has a short deck hieght. And you have to use the early push rods. But i dont know if the d3 head will work with the short push rods.Help Dennis.I talked to the kids dad today and it sounds like the truck is forsale at a good price
