What is a Factory Highboy?

I bought a 1976 F150 the other day. It's a 4X4, 4 speed. Right now it has 7.50 R16LT tires on it. The tires look to small for the truck. From the top of the front tires to the fenders is 5 inches and it's 7 inches on the back. This truck would look great with some bigger tires on it. What would ya'll suggest. I'm gonna start working on it. It has a 390 in it and is a strong runner. Thanks.

Yakima

'Highboy' is an unofficial nickname given to the '67-'77 1/2 F250 4x4s. Read the FAQ post at the top of the page. Your F150 isn't a 'highboy' - sounds like a nice truck though.

44's! Sounds like a great truck. What are you planning to use it for? Put some pics up in your gallery if you get a chance.

And welcome to FTE!

Just curious,But are wheels 5 or 8 lug? I don't remember seeing a 5 lug 16" wheel, though I have seen 8 lug 15's and 5 lug 16.5's.

Looking at a 75 hi-boy for sale for 5500.00 Has 428 engine with 4-speed manual. New to older Fords. Is this a good engine year or was the 429 the most desirable ?

If it has a 428 it would be a swap, same with the 429. I really, really doubt its a 428, but its possible. Just be sure so that you don't get screwed since the FE's all the look the same externally. Pull the codes and most importantly check the stroke.

Oh, and the best way to determine if its a highBOY is to look under the rear axle and see if it has these:

o, didn't know you wanted something in the same width, i wasn't really trying to be too specific, just speaking generally, there is\was a 16 inch rim made by ford in the five bolt pattern.

Understand,I just think 5'' in front/7" in back is alot of space on an F150 over a 7.50x16 tire

Smile

check the vin on the door, cuz it kinda sound like a f250 to me. I don't think ford made 16" wheels to fit a 70's F150. I've never seen anyone put 7.50's on aftermarket rims either
