Clutch question

I've been having some trouble with the clutch in my '94 Ranger 4x4 with the 4.0 5-speed. The main problem is difficulty engaging gears when stopped. Sometimes it acts pretty normal and other times it will barely go into gear at all. It seems like the clutch isn't releasing completely. The strange thing is the inconsistency. It seems to behave better when the outdoor temperature is fairly cold, but that isn't consistent either. Does any of this sound familiar? Could it just need bled? (Sounds like piles of fun from what I've been reading) The truck has just over 100k on it. I have no idea when or if the clutch has been changed. I've also noticed that there is quite a bit of free play at the top of the travel on the pedal. Is that normal?

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Clutch question

this could be posible but i think your release bearing or linkage is binding....your clutch pedal should not have free play at all so this may be the reason for your problem

Clutch question

I beleive you have a master cylinder that has gone bad, just replaced mine with same indications. You may have a bad slave cyl also, but i would bet its the master. Check out some replies to clutch problems i have posted to before on how to bleed after installation.

Clutch question

I'm having a similar problem with my '94 4.0 (152,000) miles. In addition, it seems that I have to floor-board the clutch then wait about a second or two for the shifter to actually shift into first.

Clutch question

I forgot to mention the extremely annoying squeak when the clutch pedal is pushed down or released. It definitely sounds like it could be coming from the master cylinder. Or are Ranger clutch pedals supposed to make this nasty noise?:-X23
