460 mates to np435?

Could I mate a 460 to a np435 4speed? Its in my 67 f100. What is needed for this combination? I thought some early 80's fords had manual trannys on 460's. Is that the same tranny? Thanks ya'lls.

yes it's perfectly feasable (however you spell that word I dunno) I put an np435 in my 86 f250 as far as I know any 4 speed tranny bellhousing that bolts up to the 460 will work(I'm pretty sure I used a bellhousing from a t19 or t18) on it just make sure that it is old enough that it is from a truck that has a manual clutch instead of a hydraulic that was my first problem was trying to use a bell from a truck with a manual operated clutch in my truck. you could get a bellhousing from a ford truck I believe 83 or earlier, you won't find an 80-83 truck with 460 but 400/351M bellhousing's will work also. good luck and have fun with it

You will need a 351/400 Bellhousing and a 390 flywheel drilled for a 11" clutch then you can put a 4spd behind a 460. I did it this way it worked fairly well this combination was figured out by a junk yard. I did the conversion over 6 years ago so I don't remember all the details. It sure made a difference in power the 460 I had was in a 77 1 ton dually that I hauled heavy loads on. I wanted a 4spd so I could use the gears to help decend hills.

Ohya I just rembered I did have to make a spacer plate that went bettween the bellhousing and the transmission the crank snout on the 460 with the thicker flywheel and the shallow depth on the bellhousing the input shaft on the transmission is too long.

just my opinion I'm not trying to bend noses :-P but I wouldn't really go with the 390 flywheel unless you make absolutely sure that you're getting one that is balanced the same as your 460. I'm not saying it won't work I just wouldn't want to put an incorectly balanced flywheel on my motor and have it not run right after doing all that work.
As far as that go's you can buy one new and it's not all that expensive pioneer makes them you can get it from an autozone or o'reilly's (if either place tells you otherwise wave the bs flag and find a partsman that's not slow in the head and actually cares about finding parts for his customers) and most likely any other parts store that carries pioneer products (most do)
as far as the spacer I did not run into this problem with the np435. I called one of my buddies that is back in the states and had him compare some back at home so between an 85 f350 460 bellhousing and 80 351M/400 bellhousing
he was unable to find any measurement differences besides the fact that the 351M/400 bellhousing used a manual clutch instead of hydraulic
good luck

I believe the 390 is a zero balance flywheel, the 410 and 428 was externally balanced.

Mike G is right a 360 flywheel will also work. 460 are neutrally balanced as well.

Ok guys. So what is the difference with externally ballanced and zero balanced? I am just learning about transmissiona and the related parts.

the 460 was zero balance until 77 and then they went to a imbalance so it matters which year 460 you have. They did use 460s with 4spd manual trans in the late 80s and early 90s so the right flywheel is available if it's a newer 460.Until and I believe incl. 77 the 460s were all internally balanced hence the zero balance on the harmonic bal. and the flywheel, after that they balanced the engine externally with the flywheel and harmonic bal.

The combo I used was a 390 Flywheel with my '69 460 and 351m bell housing behind an NP435. Instead of the spacer plate between the engine and bellhousing, I turned the 460 Pilot bushing down on a lathe until it fit into the deepest step in the back of the crankshaft. I fitted it up and made sure the output shaft of the trans wasn't anywhere neare contacting the back of the crank. Works awesome. I was told that a 302 pilot bushing was the correct size if you don't have access to a lathe.

The nose on the starter is different for a automatic than a standard , I think if m memory is correct the auto one is shorter and as such the teeth don't engage fully and can cause the problems you describe, check this out as to which is longer shorter as I may be wrong that the auto one is shorter.

1983 was the first year Ford offered a M/T with a 460 engine, and the first year Ford offered a 460 with 4WD.

daerhldgs2: That info you posted about the 460 changeover is in-correct!

The 460 engine changed mid-year 1979 not in 1977.
C
1971/78 and some 1979 460's with the D1VE block casting number prefix do not use a weighted spacer.

Some 1979 460's with the D9TE block casting number prefix USE a weighted spacer.

Since this was a "running change" that occured midyear 1979, there is no before/from a certain production date or serial number.

D9TE blocks use a different harmonic balancer and flywheel than the DIVE blocks.

Your 460 starter info is also in-correct!

E1TZ11002C .. 460 Starter (Motorcraft SA717A)

Fits: 1968/97 460 with A/T or M/T.
-----------------------------------------
stangboy_82: 1980/82 F250/350's were not available with 460 engnes, but Econolines were.

The 460 was re-introduced in F250/350's in 1983.

No 460's in 1977 and later F100's / No 460's in 1980 and later F150's / No 460's in passenger cars after 1978.

Welcome to FTE

Since Ford did not offer a manual transmission with a 460 engine until 1983, what flywheel does your truck have?

What starter are you using? One from a 460, or from something else?

The FORD truck and car parts catalogs list one part number for a 460 starter: E1TZ11002C

There is no difference if it's an A/T or M/T.
