V10 oil mileage

I have found a lot depends on the oil. I had 5W20 Valvoline in and was burning about the same a quart every 3000 miles. I had a quicky oil change place do it on the road 5w20 not sure what kind and I was using about 1 quart every 2000. Then I put Royal Purple and drove 6000 miles before changing and did not use a drop. So it seams different oils will affect how much you use.

Duallyman,
I have tried several brand names oils. Made no difference. This engine has consumed 1 qt to 1500 miles since new. I have discovered when you have one that burns oil, they burn oil regardless of the brand you use. I have stuck to the 5W-30 weight recommended by the Operators Manual.

You can get Royal Purple at Pep Boys it is pricey but as said I did not bun any oil when using it and I am very anti high dollar oil! I got a gift card and figured I would try it.
Roadrunner2 if you are using 1 qt every 1500 miles you have a problem with your motor, also by sticking with 5W30 and never trying anything else then you have no idea if something else will work. I am not saying Royal Purple will help all I am saying is what happened when I ran it. I am also saying that different oils produced different consumption levels in my truck. And the only way you can say for sure what works on your truck is to try different things on your truck.

Daimon,
Whoa, easy there big fella, Perhaps you did not comprehend what I said. I said I have tried various brands of oil, Chevorn, Shell, Motorcraft, Valvoline, etc. I think that qualifys trying some thing else, wouldn't you? There are lot of these early V10's that consumed oil. Mine is one. I have worked on engines for years. Moreover, ones that burn oil after the break in period usually continue to do so for various reasons, poor ring seating or poor oil control rings, Glazed cylinder walls, piston design, valve guides, etc. With the tight bearing tolrances on these newer engines I am not going up in weight of oil due to the oil pumps being feeble and take the chance of oil pump failure or spining a bearing, and yes it does happen on a Ford Trition V10.Nor will I pour in these so call after market oil cure alls. Over the years I have seen more damage from that stuff than you can imagine! Amazing what folks will pour into their beloved truck engine! LOL
Engine performs just fine, plenty of power. As much as I dislike a modern day engine that Ford Calls acceptalbe burning 1 quart to a 1000 miles OK I don't have to like it. As long as it runs ok and doesn't get any worse that 1500 miles to a quart I will just add it when needed and pray I can keep the spark plugs in! LOL The spark plug blowing out issue concerns me a whole bunch more that that one quart of oil to 1500 miles. BTW complaining to Ford about the oil consumption issue early on got me no where! Just a bunch of BS hoping you would get off the phone. They could care less!

Did not mean to come off wrong all I was saying it try different things.
If you read my past posts on oils you will see I am in no way the guy that says you need high doller oils. But Tesco an Oil Field company was running Royal Purple and I asked the guy why they spent so much money on oil. He showed me their logs, by changing to Royal Purple they increased the time between overhauls buy 1500 hours. That is a ton! Still I did not try it because I don't keep trucks that long so extending the life of the motor with expensive oil is wasting money for me. But when I did try it I did not use any oil. I have convintional oil back in now and am seeing about 1 qt per 3000 miles which is no biggie to me.
Again my point is until you try different oils, not brands but sync or sync blends and such you can not say it will not work. My guess with the RP which was 5W20 is that is does not thin out as much at temp of it does not break down under shear so it does not work by the rings as much but that is only a guess.
Also like you I don't plan on dumping slick 50, STP thick *** greas stuff of any other additive junk into my motor.

Schaeffers Oil
I had a '95 E350 with 351 that just recently burned , but until then was burning NO oil. When I first got it, it used about 2 quarts between changes with 140k on it. My brother had done some research on oils and suggested a treatment procedure using Schaeffers products for my engine. Here is the process I/we used:
Pulled all plugs and poored 1 ounce of Neutra in each cylinder. Turned over once or twice to spread the Neutra, and let rings and piston areas soak overnight. Reinstal plugs and start up and run until warm and drive until the EXTREME smoke quits. Added one ounce of Neutra per quart of oil in crankcase and drive about 400 or 500 miles. Dump oil and filter and replace with Schaeffers 7000 oil and Purolator "Pure One" filter (one of the best in tests). I also use the Neutra product in every tank of fuel at about an ounce per gallon.
After this procedure I had almost no oil usage (1 quart in first 8000 miles), and it just got better after that. This is a motor that started with 140000 on it and by the time it burned with 182000 on it was burning no oil. THIS SCHAEFFERS OIL IS AWESOME!!! I also might add that using the Neutra in the fuel allowed me to use regular fuel most of the time with no pinging. If I was towing heavy loads I'd usepremium.
So this brings me to my current question and why I'm glad I read this thread. Apparently the V10, which I recently acquired, is supposed to use a lighter oil. Can someone with a 98 E350 V10 tell me which oils are allowed for this motor. IE: the range of oil weights listed in the manual that I don't have.
Thanks much for a great resource here,
Mike W.
By the way... I am in no way affiliated with Schaeffers oil... just a very satisfied customer!

Adding my 2 cents to this, I have a 99 250 V-10 and use Casrol GTX. Have used 10 w30 and 5w30 and even some 10w40. Truck used no oil in 3-4000 miles until it hit about 65,000 miles. Now it is in the 1qt to 3000 mile range. I guess I can live with it but do not like it. Does not make a difference pulling my 35 ft 5th wheel or running Mt.
