400 Cylinder Head Casting Numbers

Question 400 Cylinder Head Casting Numbers
I have two heads for the 400.
One casting number is D5AE-A2A, the other is D5AE-A3A.
Are there differences between the two?

My guess would be different years maybe, or perhaps casting places. I think i saw that all cylinder heads on the 400 were the same from 75 on? Check out bubbaf250's website. Good info there.

Both heads are 74.5 cc. They are 77-later 351M/400

The first two digits indicate decade and year. In this case 1975. I believe the factory tolerance for 2V heads was 78 to 80cc.

The A2A & A3A are engineering revison #s. I don't know of any place to find out exactly what was changed but I'd suspect they're virtually identical. I wouldn't hesitate to use them on the same motor.

Compare the exhaust passages and the area around the exhaust valve seat. Look for the air injection boss "bump" and a restricted exhuast port.

Yes there were two different heads for the 400...

They are the same as far as chambers and valves go...

The difference is that one has a rotator thingy on the exhaust stem, the other one doesn't.
