My dad has his 51 F1 all disassembled and is wondering if the brake drums are still usable or not. What is the maximum allowable diameter for the brake drums before replacement?

 

Max diameter is 60 thousands beyond 11 inches. All Fords have used that as a standard for years on any size drum.

Your lucky....New F1 brake drums are readily available as reproductions.

 

Ford 1/2 ton brake parts fit up into the early 70's on cars and trucks. Unfortunately, the F-2 and F-3 parts didn't have the span the 1/2 tons did.

In '53, the front drums changed slightly (in the 1/2 tons), the center is offset differently than '52 and earlier. They are still 2" x 11" but the offset prevents them from fitting a '52. The rear drums didn't change in '53 like the front ones though. ...Terry
