glsurratt is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
Has anybody investigated to see if there is a signal line available from the integrated brake controller that could switch this mod in and out?
Have the integrated brake controller say "There's a trailer attached, send a signal to the tow haul mode and engage on start-up."

this might sound really stupid, but i'm not trying to be a smarta$$. why can you just push the button tow/haul mode on the shifter, after you start the truck?
instead of going through the trouble of doing the mod. just a thought

Cause I'm the definition of lazy in the dictionary?
Cause my CRS kicks in and I forget to engage Tow/Haul?
I just figure that somebody has gone to the trouble of designing a modification that will take a 12v input off of one of the upfitter switches and automatically throw the truck into tow/haul if the switch is on.
Why not take it a step further since the tow command system is smart enough to figure out that you have a trailer attached and find that 12 volt source in the tow command circuits and use it instead of wasting an upfitter switch?

I'll answer your question, as I followed this thread from day one. This mod was designed for a fleet truck setting where the trucks were hauling the weight that the tow/haul should be activated every time while driving. It was also so the employees who don't care and were lazy, didn't have to do any thinking. Which seems like more and more the norm now a days. It was not really intended for everyday normal use, fleet/ambulance ect setting. glsurratt brings up a good point, and it may very well be possible, since the intergrated brake controller was not out yet at the time of this thread.

Unhappy Tow Haul not working ???

I have a 2002 super duty 4x4 and my tow haul will not work any more. No light no switching over. i think it might be a relay. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks..

First, 2002 trucks do not have a tow/haul at all. The do have an overdrive off button, so that's what I assume you mean. There's no relay in that circuit, so that's probably not the problem.

Take the plastic cover off of the steering column. The screws are on the bottom. Look at the wires that enter the shifter. One or both are broken. You can either fix the wires or get a new shifter for about $50.

I took the cover off and there is a lot of spicing from Banks in there. I will look into all that.

hate to revive an old thread but have a question on difference between

Tow/Haul and overdrive button on 2003 f-250 crew 7.3L. My brother in law has a 2011 6.7L with nice trailer brake control on stick so i am guessing he has the true tow/haul mode..

I have driven a 6.0L chev with tow/haul button we pushed when heavy loaded.. never did pull a trailer. it allowed the engine to rev more and think it locked out high or overdrive gear.

crap noticed this was wrong forum.. sorry should be in 7.3L PS

The 7.3L did not have a tow/haul mode. The button on the end of the shifter only prevented the trans from shifting into fourth gear.

Since we revived this old thread.

I've rented a number of uhaul moving vans, all gas, and they all defaulted to tow/haul when started, so there seems to be a means to do this.. no idea what MY I've had, but they had the same dash as my '05 Ex (00-04 SD).

The way U-Haul does it is that they buy enough vehicles that Ford developed unique calibrations that did this for them.

so is there any advantage/ disadvantage in turning off OD when towing?.

How does that(OD) work with the torque converter when you hit the brake? the reason i ask is i have read post talking about locking up the TC when you touch the brakes and unlocks when you give it gas??

confused.

PS this is a new to me truck. 2003 lariet, crew, 2wd, 6.5 bed no mods so far.
I did get a 6.0 trans cooler that i want to change out at some point. not going to be doing any real towing for a couple years.

I do enjoy your post and thanks for your expert help.

Tow/Haul and Over Drive are two different animals.

That being said Mark Kovalsky would be the best one to answer
the question on just how they differ.
