why does it feel like my truck shifts 5 times

when I have a four speed auto trans?

It's like there is an extra shift ... or hesitation that mimicks a shift. Is this related to the rear end problem that others have had?

You are probably feeling the torque converter locking up.

Ok,

Um ... I realize this may sound stupid ... but I'm not a mechanic. What exactly is a torque converter .. and is this 'locking up' thing ... normal?

A torque convertor is a device that allows the link between the engine and transmission to slip so you can stop at a stop light without stalling the engine. A torque convertor uses fluid to drive the drive line. As the torque convertor starts spinning since it is directly connected to the flexplate mounted on the rear of the engine, the fluid pushes on internal blades that drives the driveline. Even when up to speed there is some slippage. So when the torque convertor locks up you have full solid connection between the engine and transmission offering no slippage. You want it to lock up at speed, and dissengage when at idle in gear.Tried to make this a simple as possible.
Think of it this way, a torque convertor takes the place of a clutch in a manual transmission, just no driver interface.

I'm no mechanic either but what helped me to visualize it was when someone related it to having two fans face to face, one fan powered on and running. The second fan will also be moving due to the air striking the blades. Hope this helps…...
