Wheel Bearings

I have 2000 F350 SD. The wheel bearing on the drivers side went out and the parts store said that I had to buy the whole assembly. Can you just buy the bearing? I'm not a rocket scientist, but it seems to me that if someone put that bearing in there than someone else should be able to take it out and replace it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The unit bearing/wheel hub assembly is a nonserviceable unit.....so you will need to buy the whole assembly.

parts stores often assume that you have to do one thing or another because they are unable to get a certain part, call the dealership and see if there is seperate part # for the bearing and the hub assembly.......I say these things because I have worked in the parts business before and saw this happen often

How many miles were on the truck when the bearings died? Do you typically run the truck loaded or empty? Are you running larger than stock tires? Do you do much offroading? I am trying to get a handle on how long these bearings are lasting and if there is anything which seems to contribute to their early demise.

Thanks.

Yes try to find a bearing supply source if you have the time for the truck to sit unusable for a couple of days. Mine hasn't gone out yet but had an A/C clutch pulley bearing go out on my daughter's rice burner. Was told by everyone the only way to get it fixed was to buy the entire A/C compressor. Didn't like the price of that so took pulley off and pressed the old bearing out and went to a local bearing supply store and had them measure it and took 2 days to come in but it was only $25.00 including shipping instead of $580.00 quoted by local A/C shop. It never hurts to try!

You guys don't get it. We who know are trying to help. Listen and you will learn like we had to...If you want to wait for ever be my guest. This topic has been gone over for years and they are not rebuildable...machine shops have tried..
For the sake of the whole site try not to answer unless you know what you are talking about..

sure thing "dick". I was told by several other knowitalls that I couldn't fix the bearing in my daughters car either. Glad I didn't listen to them too. Just trying to give some friendly advise. Thought that was what this site was here for.

Tapered and regular ball bearings can be replaced. The hub bearings we have are neede bearings whole different story. If they could be replaced with ease I'm sure someone would have come up with a kit to do it. Thats why they are sold as complete hub assemblys.

Friendly advise if you don't know what you are talking about can cost people time and money. In the thread previously it was said that they are not fixable.. When you see someone with over 1000 posts usually you will get correct info..Almost all the guy's who have been here awhile will only give you a confident answer if they are 100% sure..I'm not downing you , Its a good rule for everyone to follow.

I know of a few people on these different forums who have tried to find a way to get around buying the whole unit bearing/wheel hub assembly by somehow servicing the stocker.....no one has been able to do it yet. Some couldn't even get their stock assembly disassembled to try and figure anything out.....

Only option for replaceable/serviceable wheel bearings that I'm aware of would require going to a heavy duty fixed spindle setup along with new wheel hubs....

Thats twice I got blasted with that "if you don't know what you are talking about" statement on this thread. My only advise was meant to research yourself before you spend a lot of money on anything you are working on. I don't think that cost anybody any money. I am no longer in the parts business but was for years. I know that the auto manufacturers can do some pretty sneaky things when it comes to their parts. They try to make it so that you can only buy some things from the dealer. I didn't do my homework on this topic and for that I appologize but I have replaced many parts over the years that I was told I couldn't get unless I bought the whole assy.

I agree with you 100%. I rebuild everything under the sun and then some. Usually if it can be done I will rebuild it, I hate throwing stuff away..Stuff like starters alternators and various things with bearings like you said..

Hub/bearing assy. from dealer "lists" for about $640,aftermarket about $450.Depending on what kind of discount you get will decide what it will cost you so check around.I've been paying $245 for federal-mogul.
