Unhappy Brake noises

i have a 2000 xlt ranger 4x4 crew cab 3.0...every time i hit the brake pedal, i hear a thump noise, if i pump the pedal twice i will hear the thump twice while driving or slowing...if i'm sitting still and hit the brakes i don't hear the thump! sounds like its coming from the front but not sure...any ideas what this is, i have good braking action.

Do you just hear the thump, or can you feel it in the pedal?

There are many things that could come loose/wear and make the noise. A bad ball joint, wheel bearing(s) that are loose, loose caliper, loose control arm, worn control arm bushing, loose battery are just a few of the many things.

What I would suggest is trying to determine about where the noise is comming from. Even the side of the truck will help. Then, systematically check for loose and/or worn items in that area. Raise the vehicle and check for a loose wheel bearing. Then remove the wheel/tire and inspect the caliper and pads for slop. Then inspect suspension bushings. Continute on until you find something. Don't overlook bolted on items such as the sway bar and links. Just put a wrench on things and make sure they are tight. I know, it's hit and miss, but it's the best I can offer based on what I've read.

I once had a funny tap sound ever time I hit my brakes. It turned out to be the crank for the jack, located under the hood, not being secure.
