HELP! Dual tanks...I think the rear is filling the front?
Dear Group,
I have a '93 short box with dual tanks. The other day I filled up both tanks and when I got home, the front tank was overflowing out of the filler. It was literally flowing out. With the engine running, it appeared that it may be coming from the rear tank! I noticed that the rear tank was lower than expected without really driving around at all.
Could the rear tank be flowing to the front? When the switch is on the front tank, the needle looks to be pegged! I relieved the pressure by keeping both gas caps cracked to the poin of being screwed on by one thread.
Is this a know issue? Hopefully it is an easy fix.
Thanks in advance for all the replies.

My 1994 Ford F150 6 Cylinder dual tank pickup does the opposite. The front tank flows into the rear. I've gotten used to it and keep the rear tank low so it will not overflow. It overflowed a time or two until I realized what was going on. I took it to the garage and they said it would cost more in labor than parts and they didn't seem to interested in repairing it so I've managed to live with it for 3 years.

Yes there is a recall on that very problem for 90-93 models. If you have less than 150k miles and it's less than 12 years old they are supposed to fix it for free. My dad's 94 does the same thing but they said they won't do anything because it's not covered by the recall. That's BS, obviously the problem carried over to his 94 because it's doing the exact same thing. The dealer told him $360 to fix it so he just lives with it.
Just remember after every fill up run the front tank first down to about 1/4 then switch to the back tank. When the rear tank gets to 1/4 the front is usually around 1/2.

Guys, you have the "fuel cross-flow" problem. RLKBOB is right about the recall--12 years/150K miles. I just had my '93 F250 done about a month ago with 126K miles on it. When I first called the Ford dealer about it, they told me it wasn't covered, but I pushed them on it. Click on "RECALLS/TSB'S" above and to the right and search for your truck. Ford issued a recall, and an extension on the recall under an owner notification, so you should be able to get it done for free at the dealer if you're still within the 12/150K limits. I helped them along by taking in a printout with the recall numbers on it. This was after I had scheduled the fix (like I was going to pay for the repair work), then when I took the truck in, I showed them the papers and told them it should be covered. They did it for free, then.
