Windshield grill Rattle!!

I have an 04 f150 supercrew but have a problem with a minor thing. Has anyone ever had a problem with the grill that sits right outside of the front windshield vibrating and smacking against the window over bumbs??? I noticed on older f150's, they had rubber separating the grill and window so the grill won't hit the window and make noise. The grill feels tight and all, but when I even slightly tap the grill, you can hear it smacking the window and making a horrable sound from the cab! How can I fix this?

I had same problem and I solved by taking SENSOR SAFE silicone and laying a bead between windshield and cowling. Let setup overnight and then trimmed it off even w/cowling. I used a putty knife to separate cowling from winshield. Also used black silicone. Hope this helps!

Just curious, was the sound a low frequency rattle? Was it more pronounced going down the highway? I have this problem and can't figure it out. I saw a wireing harness under the grill and was wondering if that was jumping around during highway speeds.

as we speek my truck is at the dealer for this rattle in the grill. I first started to hear it when I was travvling down a very rippled street on a city street, and I heard the banging againest the window. from there on, I noticed it on the highway speeds of 70mph plus! It was a very loud noise, after all, it's hard plasitc beating the window half to death! The dealer never heard of this problem before so I'm curious to see what there going to do. I told them don't give me back this truck with the same problem, so hopfully they listen and won't bring it back to me till it's fixed because it bugs the crap out of me!

Saw some other threads on this. I have the same rattle, is this the noise that people say it the windshield air leak? I hope that this is a rattle of the cowling but had a new one installed and it is no different. I will use silicone if it helps.

Cowl rattle

I just purchased an 05 F-150 KR SCREW and noticed this thread about the cowl grill rattle. If silicone is placed between the cowl and glass, it will create a barrier and link between the two pieces which may or may not cause other problems depending on the climate where the truck is used and stored. I am suggesting that crack(s) could develop on the cowl unit since it can no longer flex with temperature change and wind resistance. I believe that is why the older trucks had a weather strip attached to the leading edge of the cowl against the glass. Also if the silicone bead edge pulls away from either the glass or cowl, even if in small sections, it will eventually stop being effective against rattle and look terrible.

This seems to be a design problem and I would get Ford to make it right, even if it ment that they had to attach a weather strip between the cowl and glass.

Your 04/05 truck has a 3/36 factory bumper to bumper warranty, get your $ worth from that warranty before it is gone.

Just got back from the dealer. They told me thats just how it is!!!!! They said that can't do anything about it! It's just the way Ford makes the trucks anymore they said! They tell me not to put anything in between the window and grill due to something how the truck drains water or something coming down from the window. So needless to say, I'm a little mad since I thought they had a fix for it, guess not :-(

Has anybody tried taking a piece of vacuum hose and slicing it down the length of the hose and slipping it over the edge of the cowl? This make fix the problem and allow the cowl to flex.

I seem to have a rattle also when driving over 65mph...only it's not a rattle but more little the sound your radio makes in AM mode when not on a station. I guess you could say it's more like a hum...but it's really loud! I figure it has something to do with either the window or moulding...any ideas?

Riv, That does not sound like the noise I have. You may want to search the threads with the windshield noise.

I have he same problem and I thought I had a rattle in my dash. I plan on putting a piece of wax paper between the grille and the windshield and then putting a drop of black silicone between them and let it dry. I will then remove the wax paper and trim the silicone so it doesn't show. That way, it won't stick to the windshield and will act as a bumper. I think it will work.
