95 Ranger 4.0L 4x4 Supercab - PROBLEM
My truck has 125,ooo on it , mostly highway . It was idling roughly with the idle fluctuating from 500 to 1000 rpm's for awhile and I put off fixing it till I had some time . This past month I did a complete tune up - plugs, wires, filters. I noticed a hole on the back of the EGR valve where it was sucking air and I replaced the EGR valve . She still idled roughly ( same as before ) . I replaced the Mass Airflow Sensor , the Idle Air Control Solenoid , the EGR vacuum regulator , the EGR - DPFE sensor , the charcoal canister purge control solenoid , the PCV valve . I made sure all vacuum hoses were good . She runs 90% better now ! The idle is nice and smooth and steady when the engine is cold . After a ride down the highway , when I come to a stop , sometimes the engine will idle fine , and sometimes the rpm's will take a dive , but then she'll recover ( never stalls ) . It's almost as if there is some resistance from the transmission ( 4 speed auto ) that tries to stall the motor . One other problem she's having is : after a highway ride , when I'm on some county roads , when I get to between 45 and 50 mph the truck will begin to shudder , as if you were pulling a trailer . If I step on the gas or slow down , it will go away . When I get to 45 or 50 again , it will start doing it again ................. Since I did all of these repairs , the Check Engine Light has NOT come on . I had the battery disconnected during repairs , so I guess it reset itself . If I try to read the codes , I come up with 00 ............................................ I'm open for any suggestions , I don't know where to start next !!!!!!!!!!

Hello, I have a '94 Ranger Supercab XLT w/4.0L but have a manual trans. I have a similar shudder at about 50mph. I had run across a Technical Service Bulletin that addressed such an issue. It pertained to what they refered to as a driveline sensitivity of the vehicle. It pertains to 1989-97 Ranger, Supercab w/automatic trans. If this is the prob. you are experiencing, they state that the action to be taken is to install revised design components as required which provide better isolation and improved driveline angles. Anyway, you might want to look into it. Though I used another source, I believe there is link on this site that will direct you to such info. It is under "Recalls/TSBs" Once you get to the right site that has the TSBs I found the info under:
1994 Ford Truck Ranger 4WD V6-245 4.0L "Driveshaft Boom/Vibration Driving 20-65 MPH- Supercab
Article No. 97-21-16
Well, I hope this helps
Good luck.

95 Ranger 4.0L 4x4 Supercab - PROBLEM
After doing the maintenance to your truck and having the battery disconnected, the idling problem you'll notice most of the time within the first 20 minutes is just the computer. But from the sounds of it this problem occurs even after that and other times. I'm not sure about all these other times what the problem could be. I know that with my '96 Ranger, 2.3L manual, sometimes when I stop and if I have the clutch in or out and be sitting in neutral, the engine will hold the RPMs around 1500 and finally drop to 800 after about 5 seconds where normally it just drops like it should.
With the shuttering of the truck, you said you only seem to notice it around 45-50mph? I'm thinking its definately not a bent drive line because if I'm correct, you'd feel that at the same RPM range in any of the gears. So I don't think thats it. It might be worth taking a look at your tires (balance, air pressure, wear, etc.) because that can cause the shuttering but I think the higher your speed gets the more you'd feel it. Another thing would be to check the brakes. I remember in a '92 Ford Tempo (personally think Ford's biggest mistake in a car but thats my opinion) when a friend of mine didn't rotate the tires for about 50,000 miles and finally rotated them, that got rid of some vibration. And when you were going about 50mph (or any highway speed really) and just start to brake, major vibration. Brake problems there. Oh hey, maybe an alignment too? Not sure how much the would effect the shuttering or just tire wear. But yeah, me personally, I'd be checking the tires and brakes and go from there. Goodluck and hope you find out the problem soon.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-May-02 AT 01:27 PM (EST)]"I replaced the Mass Airflow Sensor , the Idle Air Control Solenoid ,
the EGR vacuum regulator , the EGR - DPFE sensor , the
charcoal canister purge control solenoid , the PCV valve."
Where did you buy your charcoal canister purge control solenoid? Price? Thanks a lot!
Also, where is it located on a '95? Thanks again!
