Has This Happened To You?

I was driving home the other night and all of a sudden the headlights went dim. Looked at the guage and the needle was right in the center. Threw in the clutch, reved the engine and nothing. Next morning I discovered one of the sealed beams had blown, so I replaced it. Was I ever surprised when the guage was once again working normally. All is well!!!!

Was the gen charging the next day when the lights were on? It sounds like your regulator is bad, only charging when there is a big load on it.

I assume you are using the stock generator and regulator?

The 6V generator was rebuilt last month and a new voltage regulator was adjusted to the generator in the shop. Once the headlight was replaced it has been charging properly when the lights are on, or right after starting, or when the heater is running. I was concerned that the contacts in the regulator may have Fried, but that is not the case.

It sounds to me like everything is and was working correctly, except the headlight. The ampmeter monitors the current to or from the battery not the generator output. When you rev'd the engine you didn't see any charge because your battery was fully charged since the generator had been keeping up with the headlights and the regulator functioning correctly.
