DuraSpark with Propane
#17
like I had said, some locals had been checked, pulling away from a cattle sale barn after a sale. Since the dyed fuel is an ag fuel, they got checked. Guess what? I also live on a farm, although I don't farm it, they don't know that. So basically, are you trying to say that it didn't happen?

Duraspark works fine. I disconected and plugged my vacuum advance and set my timing at 38 degrees BTDC at 2800 rpm. Initial at idle is close to 18 degrees BTDC. It has worked great for over 200,000 miles on my 79 400. However, it does ping a little when on gas and under a good load on a warm day, even when running premium. I do run on LP 95% of the time.
You might also want to run a colder spark plug too. I use ASF32 in mine.
Hope this helps.

you still have to set the base timing like any other setup, and that's basically what you do when "twisting" the distributor, as you had said. It's no different than setting timing on points, as that is what it appears you are used to. Timing a duraspark you still remove the vacuum advance, and that's about it. You still use the timing light in the same way as you would on a point type.

My old truck was on propane and it was running a duraspark setup. I left the base timing pretty much where is was, at 13 degrees or so, but I got the local shop that specializes in propane systems to recurve the dizzy. They just changed the springs. I'm not sure what specs they used but they do lots of them.

I was refering to the distributor. The shop that did mine is called Boult & Sons Automotive at 250-493-1464. The guy you probably want to talk to is Bill, the owner.
As far as I can remember all they changed were the adavance springs, but they may have bent the weights a bit too. They also replace the pickup, but that was because it was going bad.
The actual module itself doesn't need anything done to it. They are "dumb" and don't have any advance built into them. They do have a 10º retard for starting though. It may be possible to use that as a switchable retard if you want to run dual fuel.
