ABS kicks in just prior to stopping
Let me first say, I have searched everything I can find on this issue. While it sounds quite common, I am no closer now to knowing what the problem could be. I have a 95 Ford Explorer with some ABS problems. Every time I come to a "normal" stop, my ABS comes on. There are no lights on the dash indicating any ABS problem. After reading the owners manual, it says that at 12 mph, you will feel the ABS system to a "Self test". I can feel that, so I assume it is operating normally. It engages the last 20 feet or so of a stop. If I brake hard, it never kicks in. If I brake and let go of the wheel, as soon as the ABS comes on, it pulls slightly to the right. Therefore, I am thinking the problem could be on the left front side. I don't know if I should start with changing the pads, sensors, caliper? Everything appears to be in good condition.

First thing, do you have the stock size tires on it? When you change tire sizes, it can mess with the ABS computer becasue it is no longer getting an accurate reading as to vehicle speed and tire speed. If you do have larger tires, i beleive that the computer can be programmed for the change. As far as pulling to the right, that would indicate a problem with the right side, not the left, something such as a kinked brake line, frozen caliper, something of that sort, thats causing the right side to grab more than the left. If everything looks ok, see if you can get a shop to pull the diagnostic codes for you (not positive if ABS stores codes like that, but i am pretty sure it does), and, not at a place like advance, go someplace with a decent reader that they can go back and pull up past stored codes that may not be present at that moment. Just a thought though, goodluck.
