It is a sound. From what I've read, it is produced when the turbo vibration at certain RPMs causes the turbo pedestal, the exhaust, or both to resonate harmonically with the vibration.

Is it like a humming sound? I sometimes hear a slight humming sound when cruising on the highway, and it seems there is a loss of power at that time if I hit the throttle, like there is a delay before it kicks in.

If you have it, you will know it. The turbo moan/drone comes on about 1800 rpm. On my truck, an 03 F250 SC 6.0 PSD Torqushift with 3.73 LS Diff, it came on just a speedo needle width under 60 MPH while adding throttle to go up an incline. It is a vibration that generates an audible moan. It's a low frequency sound. Ford did the following to fix it:
6.0 Moan/Droan Between 1500-2000 RPM:
Engineering has investigated this condition and found the cause to be engine firing pulses causing the turbo mounts to vibrate/resonate. There is a revised turbo pedestal: for trucks built Through 9-29-03 use P/N 3C3Z-6N639-BA; after 9-29-03 use 5C3Z-6N639-AA. Ensure the droan is not caused by a bound exhaust system. Inspect for any damaged or broken exhaust hangers. Check the turbo downpipe by loosening the pipe at the top and bottom, checking its alignment and retightening. If the droan is still present, check the part number embossed on the turbo pedestal just below the turbo compressor outlet to the intercooler. If the number IS NOT 1846207C1, replace the pedestal with the above part. After replacement, or if the number IS 1846207C1, loosen the turbo inlet pipes and EGR cooler flange and neutralize by installing the components in this order: snug the flange between the LH and RH inlet pipes; torque the EGR cooler clamp to 53 in/lbs; torque the pedestal bolts to 23 ft/lbs; torque the turbo inlet clamp to 9 ft/lbs: snug the inlet pipes to manifolds. Ensure all components are properly aligned. Torque the flange between the LH and RH inlet pipes to 20 ft/lbs and the inlet pies to the manifolds to 20 ft/lbs. Broadcast Message 0992, SSM 17530, TSB #04-9-4 & 04-18-4.

No, it is a low frequency vibration that you can hear as a low pitched "moan" at a very narrow rpm range about 1750 rpm give or take a few. It is very distinctive and you will know it when you hear it.

Ah Ha!!! I have it!!! This is my first PSD so I wasn't sure what it was. I get it and lower rpms, around 1500 to 1800. But it's happening on my new 05???? According to the TSB post above, wouldn've Ford put on the new parts to eliminate it??

Nope, 05 has different turbo than on 04 which is different than 03.

Here are the 05 diffs from 04:

1 Deleted intake throttle – instead added air flow “directors” inside RH exhaust tube & intake manifold.
2 New air inlet elbow to replace the throttle
3 Replace Rexroth high pressure pump with Shepard pump.
4 Replace Injection Press Relief (IPR) screen with perforated plate style filter – allows finer filtration (150 vs. 200 micron).
5 Water inlet relocated on front cover to accommodate new steering gear
6 New fuel supply and return pipes to accommodate water inlet
position
7 Improved EGR valve, increased flow, required for emissions.
8 Intake Manifold, EGR Distribution
9 Turbo Upgrade for flutter improvement

Also the exhaust needs to be loosened, realigned and retightened.

So should I go to my Dealer and give them the TSB info to fix it??? I've also noticed what I believe is that flutter sound - happens at low boost levels when I let off the fuel and go to idle, hear that "fluh fluh fluh..." sound as well - actually kinda anoying...

The flutter when you let off the throttle quickly is nature of the beast. No waste gates on these turbos. They are variable geometry turbo and that seems to be a side effect.

Go here for 2005 updates for the changes to the turbo which are bearings and VGT. http://dan.prxy.org/Truck/6L_bible_h...pdate_TOC.html

You need to report it to your service department and get them to nag Ford. I haven't read anything about it on the 05. You're a first!

My friend just bought a 2005 and he is haveing some kind of trouble with his tranny or something they havent figured it out yet, It feels like when it shifts into 6th gear it is fighting itself and it has a vibration and loss of power so he has to give it more throttle to get going faster before it shifts, any ideas ?
