Question 400 hp out of a 302

Hello to all:I have a stock 302 4 bolts main and a set of 351w heads casting D00E .My question ,is possible to make 400 hp using the stock 302 block w/351w heads? What I have to do? what others parts do I need? Keep on mind trying to build in low buck budget.

thanks for any help.

No, 302 + stock Ford heads + low budget doesn't equal 400HP.

It would be very difficult to get an honest 300HP with those restrictions.

There's no substitute for cubic inches. You need to start with a larger displacement engine...

TO get 400 hp out of a 302 you will need to stroke it, 9 to 1 pistons some racing heads, and a cam. But i can be done.

With your heads reworked with larger valves, a 280 degree cam and, you will get near 300. Plan on $1500 or a little more.

You can get 400 + rear wheel horsepower out of a 302 but it isn't going to be cheap. I have built two Mustangs one for my self and the other for my son (his money), mine was 426 hp and my sons was 443 hp both figures were at the rear wheels, both of these engines were 1993 EFI versions.

To do this I had alum heads, B303 roller cam, stock crank and pistons, crain ign, I had a powerdine supercharger and my son had a novi supercharger. There was a lot more done but the point is it was a lot of cash (can't say how much my wife may read this post) was it worth it YES, would I do it again will see I think I may get a 2005 .

Merc546, Chuck if you decide to do this on an '05, we will make a road trip across the street to Mustang Racing Technology to see his '05 Mustang 3 valve with a Novi S/C. It will be back from the SEMA show in 3 or 4 days. Joe.

Somebody correct me on this...but if that block in reality is a 302 four bolt main, it would be a Boss 302 block, identifiable by screw-in freeze plugs...or it's been converted to four bolt mains by a machine shop. In the event it is a real Boss 302 block in good shape, I'd sell it to one of the Mustang resto boys for big bucks & use the cash to build a cheap, easily available two bolt main which will easily stand 400hp. My $.02....

Not sure if this is worth a look or not, but here's the Joe Sherman 400 hp 302 buildup I ran across. http://www.mustangandfords.com/techarticles/28898/
