Buildling a custom front bumper

I have an 89 F350 4x4 Crew 460. I want to build a bumper for the front that is flat on top so that I can walk on it and put a winch and D-rings on it. Does anyone have a link to some plans or some design ideas for a good rugged front bumper? I'm thinking of using rectangular steel to build a frame that would serve the load bearing purposes and then covering that with diamond plate. What do you guys think? Any ideas on how thick of plate, tubing I should use? They make a bumper for about $2500 for a Super Duty Ford that is pretty awesome looking, I might model it after that.

look into the RanchHands....they are built exactly like that except they use round tubing, then they covered it with diamond plate to walk on. I have one on my 96 PSD and I love it

Here's what I'm working on right now. I've got a frame made of 1/4" angle iron the same width as the truck frame with a winch roller. I'm going to come off of this wit side supports to keep the ends of the bumper strong. The white bumper face is fairly heavy material and just bolts right onto the frame. Atop that will be a flat diamond plate surface to walk on so I can work on my engine. I'm not 100% certain how much the bumper will stick out but I'll probably have 8-12" to stand on when I'm done.

Forgive the poor pics, it's dark here.

Here is a picture of mine that I made... there are a bunch of pictures of the build in my gallery if you wanna check it out. The design could easily be done to fit your needs, you could build it without the stuff on top, and reinforce where needed for your winch.

good luck.

You sure do if you run into a deer. Or a pedestrian. Anyways, two thumbs up on the fab of that bumper superstroker, looks real slick!

I built mine with a friend. Took us 15 hrs in the shop. I used 3" angle iron for the mounts and support, 4" steel tube for the body, 1/4" diamond plate for the deck. There's some pics of the build up and final product in my webshots found here
