Tax for your truck?

What I want to know is....
Do you pay a tax fee for using your car/truck on the road? What I mean is not the fee for using brigdes or toll roads, I mean Tax in gerneral.
If so...how much is is in average?

We here in Germany have to pay tax for usíng a car/truck on the roads.
Or Tax system is classified in diffrent typs, for example, we have to pay up to $30 for every 100 cc ( car, 2.0 ltr engine = 20 x $30 = $600 for a year)
This system depends of which smog emission the engine produce ( new high tech engine is cheaper as an old engine) It also depends of Diesel or gas.

Trucks are diffrent, they pay for capability of load

So i wonder...

Most states charge a basic license fee, with a variable amount depending on the value of the vehicle.

An '04 Audi A4 pays:
Registration fee..........$40
License fee................181
County fee....................8
Smog fee......................6

Total: $235.

The license fee was $558 prior to our new Austrian governor reducing it.
That is the portion based on value.

An '85 E150 cargo van pays:

Registration fee......................$40
License fee.............................11
Weight fee..............................24
County fee...............................8
Total $83

License fee was $33 before the change.

Some states are much lower as they do not tax the value of the car, or have not heard of that trick yet.

Heavier trucks get higher fees, not sure what the scale is, but it gets very expensive for the larger trucks. Stay tuned for 1000 word posts about how much tax the large truck boys pay....

Out here in the ol' west (az), you pay your registration based off of vehicle value. I paid $29k for my truck in 2000 and my registration was about $380 or so, and since then it's gone down every year (as does the value of my truck). I had a '78 bronco (12 years ago) that I paid $8 a year to register.

I think I even had to pay a gas guzzler "tax" on my current truck when I bought it, but I can't remember, too long ago.

For my truck, here in Missouri, I registered for 12,000 pounds, and I should have gone heavier, but didn't think of it at the time, but generally only run that much, but it cost $76 for 2 years. That actually is pretty cheap. If I moved up to 18,000 pounds, it would be $76 for the year, but it comes with a fringe benefit of not being required to wear a seat belt, in state only. They do charge more for the newer vehicles. Mine's old enough that it is cheap.

In North Carolina we pay annual vehicle registration and personal property tax based on the value of the vehicle. The county sets the tax rate and if you live in a city, they add an additional tax on top of the county tax.

we do have a separate tax that I forgot about, not part of the registration, don't know how bad yet, as I haven't been here long enough to have to pay it yet, but next January, I will have to pay it.

We certainly do pay taxes to drive our vehicles on the road. Its called fuel tax, at the federal level its 24.4 cents per gallon on diesel fuel and 18.4 cents per gallon on gasoline. In addition to that, each state adds their own fuel tax ranging from 7.5 cents per gallon to 31.2 cents per gallon. In some states, there are also county and city taxes above and beyond what is already on it. If you are driving a big truck (rig), you also pay a Federal Heavy Use Tax (FHUT) of up to $550 per year directly to the IRS, and some states add a weight/distance tax.

When you figure out the bottom line, as much as 30% (even at today's prices!) of the cost of your fuel could be in taxes. So if you think you're not paying taxes to drive your vehicle, other than your registration, in the USA, think again.

good point. $.35 pergallon is fuel tax around here. As you said, it can vary by town, county, and state.

My truck's taxes are $5 a year, but that's for a 74 Datsun Pickup;
Oh yeah, don't forget the sales tax on the tires, I think that was $14 .

in quebec i pay about 250$ for each vehicle in government registration.. that includes the cost of my public auto insurance. we have a no fault insurance plan that puts a price tag on all sorts of bodily injury so people can't sue each other. in some cities they add 30$ or so a year to put towards public transit. it also goes up if you have tickets

seems hight but i pay only another 250$ for liability insurance for my two vehicles

no annual inspection, no gas guzzler tax

what sux is we have to pay 8% provincial sales tax even on a used vehicle. new car is worse we get with the 7% federal sales tax on top of the 8% the province taxes

California has three different fees collected annually.

Registration fee, a fixed amount that varies by county, about $30
License fee, based on .67 percent of the value.
Weight fee for trucks only, based on unladen, not gross, starting at $8 for something like a regular cab Ranger. Station wagons pay $1 extra, but no weight fee. An Excursion is registered as a station wagon, not a truck. Motorhomes also do not pay weight fees.

The license fee was 2 percent and was reduced to .67 percent a few years ago.

My 1994 F-150 was $100 total this year.

Paid 6% sales tax at time of purchase and a $58 license tag fee every year. Other than fuel tax paid at time of fuel purchase, that's all there is in good ol' Florida USA!

In PA I pay $35.00 for car registration and $48.00 for my truck. In addition, for each vehicle, there is PA State Safety Inspection at $38.00 for each vehicle, plus $62.00 per year for Emissions Inspection. What burns me is that in Delaware, (neighboring State) $45.00 gets you two years of registration, and includes the State Safety and Enissions Inspections. Don't recall what the gas tax is in PA, but figure it's about $0.35 per gallon. Lousy.

Thank you all for the information.

Background to my question regarding the taxes:

At present time I pay 213 Euros Tax (approx. $200) a year for my 85 F-250 6.9 Diesel. Basis for this fee is the load capacity of 920kg.
Futhermore we have to pay approx. .70 cent for one liter Diesel/gas fuel tax, yes, thats $2,60 fuel tax for a gallon.
Now our gov. has a new plan.....all SUV and maybe also the pick up's which are taxed for their load capacity should be taxed for their engine size and to the emissions. That means in case of my truck (6.9 ltr. x $35 for each 100 cc)70 x $35 = $2450 a year plus the fuel tax (12 - 14 mpg)

Anybody here who wants a '85 F-250 ??? (joke)

Jens

BTW: We have to check our Cars/trucks every 2 years at a special tech center ( brakes, corrosion, electric, the whole condition...) plus a emission test, also every 2 years. Do you have similar tests????
