Excellent info. I printed this thread and took it with me to the dealer, as my truck had been cycling through the check engine light. The truck had previously been at the dealer one week before, and they said the problem was a bad battery cable. I gave this thread to the service writer, and three hours later I picked the truck up. I can't read their fix report very well, but it did mention the P0299 code, and a replaced sensor. I just wanted to let you guys know that your efforts are appreciated when you post this kind of detailed info and solutions.
Thanks,
Dave

Fordguy:
Go to the "Tech Folder" at the top of this forum (6.0 Powerstroke) or go here:
http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=303583

When you get there you want to go to the:
Powerstroke 6.0 L Technical Intro Manual

Then select page 9 for a view of the right front of the engine.

The sensor is mounted at the top of a stainless tube from the exhaust manifold and located at the driver's side front of the engine.

I posted a couple of months ago about the EBP sensor that Ford is testing. My dealer installed one on my 2004 6.0. It solved the surging and engine light problems. Many dealers do not know about them and my dealer was given 3 of them to install at his own discretion. My truck ran much better with the new sensor. I also have had the new flash and have picked up about 1 mpg to 17 highway. You must ask for a Ford factory engineer/tech to get one.

In all honesty the EBP sensor is something Ford has been looking at for some time. It's usually easy to diagnose for those of us with the diagnostic equipment. I say usually because the sensors can misbehave intermittently as someone mentioned. The trick with these engines is to first check all of your pressure sensors looking for biased readings and a little tip for ya, in all temperature ranges - cold, warm up and operating temperature.

Oh, the EBP sensor - it has been updated with a new part released in March. I thought that was important for you to know! I realize this is an old thread and I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere.

EBP Sensor

"Doc"
I had FMC engineers work on my truck March 15, 2005. They replaced the EBP sensor. Do you think it was the new one?
Thanks, Paclik

Very likely that it was, this revised sensor affects trucks with the 6.0 built before 1/17/05 and the new sensor was announced shortly after that. The part number for the new sensor is 4C3Z-9J460-A, so if that number appears on your invoice it's good!

Unhappy Smoke And Intermittent Surging

WOW! That is great info. Just came back from Williams Arizona this last weekend and had a few issues with my 6.0 cutting off and smoking intermittently up hills. The Check Engine light never came on but it seemed to have stopped after I shut the engine off and Re-started it... Unfortunatly, after a few miles, it started smoking again. I drove back to Los Angeles California and noticed as the Elevation dropped, the less the truck smoked. I just dropped off the truck at the local dealer and am crossing my fingers for a solution. My 6.0 is a FX4 CREW CAB with 23500 miles on it with a Build Date of June 10 2003. I hope I'm not rambling on but I had never experienced any other problems with the truck except for a Brief shut-down mode last summer while towing my Toy Hauler.
Lastly, now I can sleep at night knowing that it wasn't me hearing things....

i already voided my warranty and mine just went bad for the second time. I took my truck to get detailed and the moron plugged in my EGR valve and that screwed up everything!

My '05 F250 CCSB came off the lot in December with "surge under steady pedal" and "turbo sneeze". At Ford's direction the dealer replaced the EBPS (in February) and then the VGTA. The new VGTA took care surge under steady pedal. They continued to struggle with turbo sneeze. In April the dealer replaced the EBPS (new part number) and then in May they took the truck for a week and put a new flash on the PCM and Fuel management system, apparently the flash was brand new. So far both issues have disappeared. The truck has 28,000 miles on it and I love it.

Great info. I have a 2003 excursion and have been battling the turbo sneeze issue for about 5 months. The dealer has replaced my turbo and my intercooler. I still have the same problem with the turbo cutting in and out or hanging open. So if I am understanding all the other comments, replacing the EBP sensor should solve the problem. Does it matter that I have an after market RBP exhaust from the turbo back with no catalyic converter? Looking for any help. My truck is in the shop and the dealer does not know what to do to fix the issue. One last question, will the turbo sneeze cause any damage to the motor?
